Paul Rodgers recently addressed rumors about his health and involvement with Alex Van Halen’s upcoming album. He shared a clarifying statement on X (formerly Twitter).
He issued the statement in response to Alex Van Halen’s recent interview comments about Rodgers’ inability to participate in new Van Halen material.
“To squash the rumors… My health is good,” Rodgers said. “I feel fit and strong and I am rehearsing to perform March 2nd at the Adopt the Arts Sound and Vision Awards in Palm Springs.”
The Free frontman went on to clarify his decision regarding the Van Halen collaboration.
“Thanks to Van Halen for inviting me to work on a track with them, but I am in my acoustic, zen phase of life,” he continued.
This statement directly contradicts Alex Van Halen’s recent interview where he suggested that Rodgers “can’t do it anymore” and found it “very difficult” to decline the collaboration due to physical limitations.
Rodgers’ health clarification comes amid ongoing speculation about his physical condition following well-documented medical challenges in recent years. The 76-year-old rock legend has faced significant health obstacles that have impacted his career trajectory.
Blabbermouth reported that Rodgers suffered 11 minor strokes and two major strokes — one in 2016 and another in October 2019. These medical events required extensive recovery periods and surgical intervention to address the underlying causes.
The severity of his health challenges became more apparent when details emerged about his treatment. AOL noted that during a 2023 interview with CBS Mornings, Rodgers revealed that the major strokes in 2016 and 2019 required carotid endarterectomy surgery. He needed six months of recovery before he could resume guitar playing and singing.
His health concerns have also affected other high-profile appearances. Guitar World documented that Rodgers dropped out of Bad Company’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in 2025, stating “At this time I have to prioritize my health.”
Despite these past challenges, DRG News confirmed that the Bad Company star was quick to explain that his health was not a factor in his decision to decline the Van Halen collaboration. He emphasized instead his current artistic direction toward acoustic music.
