Paul McCartney Says The Beatles And Nirvana Suffered From Similar Tragedies

Foo Fighters was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame a couple of days ago by the iconic Beatles star Paul McCartney. In his induction speech, McCartney pointed out the similarities they shared with Dave Grohl and that their bands had to go through similar tragedies.

It isn’t the first time Grohl was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2014, he was there as a member of Nirvana in their first year of eligibility. This year was also the first year Foo Fighters’ eligibility, and they succeeded in taking their place among the greatest contributors of Rock and Roll.

Paul McCartney started his speech by talking about himself and how he fell into rock and roll, which became his entire life afterward. He stated that there are a lot of similarities between him and Grohl in this sense. Unfortunately, both bands experienced a similar tragedy.

Although the Beatles had already disbanded before John Lennon’s death, Nirvana broke up right after Kurt Cobain’s. After the saddening events both musicians went through, they decided to embrace music one more time and make a big reentrance by playing all the instruments themselves.

Here is what McCartney stated about the similar tragic events they both went through:

“So when that happened, and I fell into rock and roll, I joined a group. And my group was the Beatles. Like I say, the world changed. Dave did a similar kind of thing. He joined a group — Nirvana. We had a great time with our groups, but then eventually tragedy happened, and my group broke up. The same happened with Dave, his group broke up under tragic circumstances.

And so then the question is, what do you do now? And we both were presented with that question. In my case, I thought, ‘Well, I’ll make an album where I play all the instruments myself.’ So I did that. Dave’s group broke up — what’s he do? He makes an album where he plays all the instruments himself. Do you think this guy is stalking me?

The fans never considered that McCartney and Grohl would have such similarities in their lives, starting from how they first fell into the rock world to the tragic deaths of their bandmates. However, they both succeeded in reemerging in the music world with their solo talents. Although it wasn’t the first time Grohl went up on that stage, it was the first time he was inducted as a member of his own creation, Foo Fighters.
