The State of Tennessee’s decision to honor Grammy-winning band Paramore while excluding artist Allison Russell has ignited a debate, spotlighting the selective recognition of artists based on their political stances.
In the wake of the 2024 Grammy Awards, where both Paramore and Russell were lauded with awards for their musical achievements, a distinction was made by Tennessee’s political leaders regarding who would be honored by the state.
Political Divide In Honoring Musicians

While Paramore’s wins in the Best Rock Album and Best Alternative Music Performance categories were celebrated, an attempt to honor Russell, who won Best American Roots Performance for her song ‘Eve Was Black,’ was blocked.
The effort to recognize these artists was introduced by Democrat Justin Jones but faced opposition from House Republican Caucus Chair Jeremy Faison. Faison’s procedural maneuver removed the resolution to honor Allison from consideration, leaving the reasons for his objection unexplained.
Public Reaction And Artist Support

This action has raised questions about the criteria used by Tennessee’s lawmakers to honor artists and whether political or social stances may influence these decisions. The controversy reached the House floor, where Jones highlighted the significance of honoring Black history and achievements, only to be silenced by House Speaker Cameron Sexton. Despite this setback, Russell expressed her appreciation for the support from Jones and Rep. Gloria Johnson, writing on X:
“That the TN GOP blocked it, I take as a compliment. Their bigotry, sadly, is on relentless display. We have a chance this year to make a real change in TN.”
Jones and Johnson, known as the ‘Tennessee three,’ faced expulsion efforts by Republicans due to their advocacy for free speech and inclusion. They highlighted this commitment by presenting a free-speech award to Russell, who, along with Paramore’s Hayley Williams, has protested against Tennessee’s anti-LGBTQIA+ laws.
