Opeth’s Mikael Akerfeldt: ‘Paradise Guys Were So Misarable And It Was Funny’

In the early 2000s, Opeth released two monumental albums, ‘Damnation’ and ‘Deliverance,’ back to back, setting the stage for a lengthy world tour. Paradise Lost and Lacuna Coil joined the band for various dates at the time.

Mikael Åkerfeldt talked about his experience with Paradise Lost during the trek in a recent chat with Metal Hammer:

“The Paradise Lost guys were so miserable it’s funny! We had a good time with both Lacuna Coil and Paradise Lost. I’d been such a huge fan [of Paradise Lost] that I worried they might end up being difficult, but I laughed so much on that tour.”

Interactions Between The Two Bands

The ‘As I Die’ band was a special guest for Opeth during their 2006 UK tour for a number of shows. In the following years, Mikael and other members would welcome the ex-Paradise Lost drummer, Waltteri Väyrynen, into their fold.

The frontman announced the news of their new member on Instagram by saying, ‘Walt has got it down, to put it mildly.’

Now, Opeth gears up for an upcoming tour with their new drummer in 2024. The trek is set to kick off on June 26 in Copenhagen, Denmark, and will take them across Europe.
