Bettencourt recalled that Osbourne had invited him to join his band during the 1990s, but he declined the offer at the time. That rejection apparently left a lasting impression on the legendary rock vocalist.
“I have known Ozzy for a bit,” Bettencourt explained. “He asked me to join his band in the 90s and I said no. And that’s the last thing he said to me. He goes, ‘YOU PRICK, you said no to me.'”
The exchange captures a moment of candid humor between the two musicians. It reflects Osbourne’s characteristically blunt personality. However, the story behind this rejection reveals a deeper narrative about loyalty, timing, and the choices that define a musician’s career.
Bettencourt was invited by Ozzy Osbourne in the mid-1990s to join his solo band as a guitarist, according to Loudwire. This invitation came specifically around 1994-1996 when Zakk Wylde had temporarily left Osbourne’s lineup. At that time, Bettencourt was already established with his own band, Extreme, which was gaining momentum. Rather than pursue the opportunity with one of rock’s most iconic figures, Bettencourt chose to remain loyal to his existing project.
What made this moment particularly significant was its rarity in Osbourne’s career. Guitar Player reported that Ozzy said Bettencourt was “the only guitar player that said no to me.” This statement highlights just how uncommon such a refusal was. Most musicians would have jumped at the chance to play alongside a rock legend, making Bettencourt’s decision to prioritize Extreme all the more noteworthy.
Bettencourt’s history with Osbourne extended back even further. Their final notable interaction occurred at Ozzy’s “Back to the Beginning” farewell show. Osbourne reminded Bettencourt of his decision to decline the offer all those years ago.
