Nuno Bettencourt recently commented on Wolfgang Van Halen’s decision to drop out of Black Sabbath’s ‘Back to the Beginning’ event. He shared his perspective on Steve and Rik’s POTcast.

Bettencourt explained the reasoning behind Van Halen’s withdrawal as a strategic career decision rather than a scheduling conflict.

“I got a call [saying] Wolfgang Van Halen just dropped out [of the Black Sabbath’s ‘Back to the Beginning event]. I said ‘yeah, he’s dropping out because he’s smart! Nobody wants to play those f*cking Randy Rhoads or Jake E. Lee solos!'” Bettencourt said.

The high stakes involved in performing such iconic material on a major stage prompted Bettencourt’s elaboration on the pressure.

“Nobody wants to f*cking do it because if you go down in flames on that stage with Ozzy there and all your peers watching, your career is over!” he continued.

Bettencourt described his own experience stepping in to perform at the event. He highlighted the intensive preparation required for the performance.

“I ended up playing 12 f*cking songs. … I just wanted to respect the songs [and] f*cking go all in… I was in here for weeks for f*cking like four or five hours a day standing up, performing the f*ckers,” he said.

Bettencourt’s comments provide insight into the pressure surrounding one of metal’s most significant events. Ultimate Classic Rock documented that the Black Sabbath farewell event “Back to the Beginning” took place on July 5, 2025, at Villa Park in Birmingham, England. This marked a historic moment for the legendary band and their fans worldwide.

The event featured the original Black Sabbath lineup reuniting for what would become a farewell performance. Cure Parkinson’s reported that the concert brought together Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward. They performed together live for the first time since 2005, creating an emotionally charged atmosphere for attendees and metal enthusiasts globally.

The band’s setlist focused on their most iconic material from their early years. YouTube documentation showed that Black Sabbath performed a focused four-song set primarily from their 1970 albums Black Sabbath and Paranoid. The setlist included “War Pigs,” “N.I.B.,” “Iron Man,” and “Paranoid,” with the show closing with an epic fireworks display as the band took their final bow.

The pressure Bettencourt referenced—about performing legendary guitar solos from Black Sabbath’s history—underscores why such a reunion was so significant. The band’s legacy was built on the groundbreaking work of guitarists like Randy Rhoads and Jake E. Lee during Ozzy’s solo career. This represents some of metal’s most technically demanding and emotionally resonant material. For any guitarist stepping into such a role, the stakes were indeed career-defining, as Bettencourt aptly noted.

This farewell event ultimately became a poignant closing chapter for the band and the metal community. It celebrated Black Sabbath’s unparalleled legacy and their influence on generations of musicians and fans worldwide.
