Nikki Sixx Shares The Instrument He Would Play Other Than The Bass

Mötley Crüe’s Nikki Sixx recently held a Q&A session with fans on Twitter and revealed which instrument he would choose to play other than the bass guitar.

Besides being the primary songwriter of Mötley Crüe, Nikki Sixx also plays bass for the band since its formation in 1981. While living with his mother in Seattle as a young boy, Sixx learned how to play the bass guitar and bought his first instrument with the money he gained from selling a stolen guitar. At 17, the bassist auditioned for several bands and eventually joined Sister. It was the first band he lent his bass-playing skills to.

Sixx formed the band London with his Sister bandmate Lizzie Grey. After he left the band, the bassist formed Mötley Crüe with Tommy Lee. From that point on, Sixx rose to fame as Crüe’s bass player. He can be mainly seen playing Gibson Thunderbird basses and has signature Gibson models, such as the Nikki Sixx Signature Blackbird, which was discontinued in 2003. Later, the model was back in production as the Epiphone Nikki Sixx Blackbird.

The Mötley Crüe icon plays the bass with a pick and a distortion pedal in line. Sixx likes to play aggressively with fewer melodies, as he prefers going along with the guitars that create melodies. He aims to support the songs and sometimes throws a melody whenever possible. During the Crüe shows, the bassist mostly sticks with Tommy Lee’s drumming. So, it is clear that he has his own way of playing the bass.

Recently, Nikki Sixx held one of his AskSixx sessions on Twitter. One of his fans asked him which instrument he would choose if he had to pick one other than the bass. The user then jokingly said Sixx could contact him if Tommy Lee needed a tech or a fill-in in the future, as they are also a drummer. Without giving a lengthy explanation or any reason, Sixx simply responded by saying it would be the guitar.

Here is what the fan asked Nikki Sixx:

“If you had to pick an instrument other than bass, what would it be? I think mine would be the harp if I couldn’t play drums. P.S. if Lee needs a tech/fill-in, hit me up.”

Sixx then responded:

Guitar.
