Mötley Crüe’s Nikki Sixx responded to his fans’ questions during a Q&A session, addressing criticism about Mick Mars’ exit from the band and the subsequent lawsuit, as reported on X (formerly Twitter).
The bassist’s response came after a fan directly questioned his role in the situation. When asked “How could you do that to Mick?” by a concerned fan, Sixx provided his perspective on the legal dispute.
“People seem to forget that he sued us and obviously lost the lawsuit because it wasn’t factual,” Sixx said. “Mick was taken advantage of by dirty lawyers and hurt everybody and the fans are still confused. Heartbreaking for us.”
The statement addresses the ongoing confusion among fans regarding Mars’ departure from the legendary rock band and the legal proceedings that followed.
The legal battle between Mars and his former bandmates began after the guitarist’s retirement from touring in October 2022. Metal Injection reported that Mars announced his retirement citing worsening health issues related to ankylosing spondylitis, a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the spine and pelvis.
Mars filed his lawsuit in 2023, making serious allegations against his former bandmates. Louder Sound revealed that Mars claimed the band wanted to cut his 25% share in profits from Mötley Crüe Inc’s earnings. He also accused Sixx and the others of miming parts during the 2022 Stadium Tour, a claim that would later prove central to the legal proceedings.
The arbitration process ultimately ruled decisively in Mötley Crüe’s favor. Blabbermouth noted that an arbitrator found the miming claims false and ordered Mars to repay more than $750,000 in unrecouped tour advances. The ruling also upheld the band’s decision to end Mars’ role as an officer and director.
The final judgment left Mars facing significant financial consequences. Guitar World confirmed that the net judgment was ruled against him, marking a complete legal victory for the remaining members of Mötley Crüe. The bitter conflict that began with Mars’ health-related retirement had evolved into a costly legal battle that ultimately vindicated the band’s position.
