Nikki Sixx Addresses David Lee Roth’s Refusal To Open For Mötley Crüe
Nikki Sixx recently opened up about David Lee Roth’s refusal to open for Mötley Crüe in their Stadium Tour and stated that he understands his position.
Mötley Crüe is getting ready for their 2022 Stadium Tour in the United States currently. As you might know, the band offered Van Halen vocalist David Lee Roth to open up for them in the tour. However, Roth declined the offer giving a different reason than his retirement.
After the disbandment of Van Halen following Eddie Van Halen’s death, Roth also announced his retirement. He stated in his first and last announcement that he will be retiring after performing five last shows. Apparently, before the announcement, Mötley Crüe made him an offer to join them on stage for their tour. However, he refused their offer since he didn’t want to open for bands he influenced.
In a recent interview with Forbes, Mötley Crüe’s Nikki Sixx evaluated Roth’s rejection. He stated that it could have been very exciting to have him on tour with them because he inspired a lot of musicians. Accepting that Mötley Crüe was also inspired by the musician, Nikki stated that he understands Roth’s point of view. Sixx also added that he wouldn’t say something bad about DLR’s decision or resent him just because the mass media is expecting such thing.
Here is how Sixx reacted to Roth’s decline of their offer:
“Yeah, well, he probably influenced everybody. That band is a monster. But, you know, understandably. We all get to make our choices and stuff. I just thought with the body of work that he has with a lot of people, it could be really exciting. I understand his position, too.
It’s also interesting for me now, when I do press, I’m really aware that a lot of press outlets are looking for clickbait. And what I like about ‘The First 21’ is I don’t really feel like there’s a lot of clickbait in there. Maybe that’s a bad thing because, you know, you click on the link, and someone gets five cents in advertising. I don’t want to sell advertising. I want to sell an experience of what these first 21 years are about. So I tried to be very honest, and ‘this is kind of how it is,’ but no deep shots.”
The fans didn’t really support Roth’s decision because there are a lot of musicians who opened, covered, and supported the bands they influenced. For example, Alice Cooper influenced Iron Maiden, yet, he opened for the band without showing any signs of ego. One of the most inspiring musicians, Elton John, recently covered Metallica’s ‘Nothing Else Matters’ with pop singer Miley Cyrus.
