Nick Cave said in a message on his blog The Red Hand Files that he wants Kanye West’s music at his funeral.

The singer answered two questions on his blog on January 29. One was about his appearance on BBC’s Desert Island Discs, and the other was about his funeral choice. In response to the latter question, he wrote, “Oh, and Damian, please, ‘I Am A God’ by Kanye West.”

This comes just days after Cave picked West’s ‘Yeezus’ as one of his top eight favorite records on Desert Island Discs. He explained, via NME, “This became, weirdly enough, a kind of family song. My kids love it, Susie loves it, I love it.”

The rocker added, “It’s an extremely playful, extremely dark, complex song where on the one hand, Kanye is presenting himself as a god, and then towards the end of the song, he’s screaming in terror.”

“It’s an unbelievably deep song, in my view. This is a song that I value on a personal level, and actually I just think is a complete, amazing work of art,” he further shared about the song.

Cave has talked about his love for Kanye’s music many times before, calling him in 2020 ‘the greatest artist’ on Earth. He said, “Making art is a form of madness – we slip deep within our own singular vision and become lost to it. There is no musician on Earth that is as committed to their own derangement as Kanye, and in this respect, at this point in time, he is our greatest artist.”

The singer later said he found West’s previously alleged anti-Semitic comments ‘disappointing’ but he still loved his music. He told BBC, “I find antisemitism in particular [to be] distasteful. It’s been very disappointing to hear these remarks and such sort of obvious, boring kind of reductive tropes that he’s actually pedaling.”

However, Nick also said he could still enjoy West’s music, explaining, “It’s a personal choice as to whether you can go on and listen to that person’s music. I personally can. I love Kanye’s music. I feel that he’s done the best music of anybody in some time, the most interesting, challenging, bold music.”

Cave recently announced a solo European tour set for June to August.
