New Smashing Pumpkins Guitarist Proposes Major Change For The Band

Smashing Pumpkins’ new guitarist Kiki Wong wants to bring the band’s heavier sound back.

The musician talked about her playing skills:

“Honestly, I may not be the absolute best player out there – in fact, I know I’m not! I’m continuously learning, trying to improve every day. But what I have is an undying love for guitar and heavy metal.”

She explained her relationship with guitar and heavy metal:

“I probably have an unhealthy obsession with guitar and heavy metal, and a slightly self-deprecating sense of humor. But I hope it can bring a little bit of that heavy side of Pumpkins out more, since I know that’s what their music is rooted in.”

Smashing Pumpkins Revealed Wong As Their New Member Last Month

Last October, original Smashing Pumpkins guitarist Jeff Schroeder left the band. Then, Smashing Pumpkins started to look for a new guitarist, sharing updates with fans. They announced last month on Instagram that they found one: Kiki Wong was their new official guitarist:

“First off, I really want to thank everyone who submitted materials for consideration. It wasn’t an easy decision with how much great guitar playing we were lucky enough to hear and see over the past few months. I was a fan of Kiki’s before she submitted her name to be considered—and it’s great that someone of her acumen will be part of our touring family. I can’t wait to hit the road with Kiki as part of our mad circus.”

In the same post, Kiki also talked about her feelings about joining the group:

“It’s been an absolute wild ride, but I am beyond honored and humbled to be chosen to perform alongside some of rock’s greatest and most influential musicians of all time. I never thought little ol’ 15-year-old me playing metal guitar in my bedroom would amount to this moment. It goes to show hard work and perseverance truly pays off if you’re willing to push through the tough stuff, so never lose hope out there. I am so grateful for this opportunity and can’t wait to share the stage with the legendary Smashing Pumpkins!”

Wong and her new Smashing Pumpkins bandmates will perform live together for the first time on June 7 at Birmingham Utilita Arena during their tour with Weezer. After European dates, they will have shows in the United States.
