Geddy Lee recently commented on Rush’s decision to bring in a new drummer. He addressed the transition in a statement shared on CBC News.

Lee explained how the band came to select Anika Nilles as Neil Peart’s replacement. The drummer previously worked with Jeff Beck and was introduced to Rush through one of Lee’s road crew members. She impressed the band during a private studio session in Canada.

“When we made the decision to see what it’s like to play with another drummer, we contacted her, and she’s just a fantastic person,” Lee said. “She came to Canada and we very surreptitiously snuck into a studio and worked out for about a week. By the end of it, we were convinced that this would be a go for us.”

Lee acknowledged that Nilles faced a unique challenge in learning Rush’s complex catalog. She was not a longtime fan of the band, so the band had to work through each song individually to help her understand the nuances of their music.

“When she first came over here, we started playing some of the songs, trying to translate RUSH music to someone who didn’t really grow up as a RUSH fan; she was not a Rush fan,” Lee explained. “So it was a bit of a daunting task. We had to go through each song and explain the nuances of the song and the idiosyncratic nature of how our songs are put together.”

Despite the initial challenges, Lee praised Nilles’ work ethic and attitude. “She’s an incredibly hard worker. She’s got great technical facility and she’s just got a really positive attitude, and that’s really good for Alex and I to be around right now,” he concluded.

This announcement marks a significant milestone for Rush as the legendary Canadian rock band prepares for its future without Neil Peart. Peart passed away in 2020. The selection of Anika Nilles represents the band’s thoughtful approach to honoring Peart’s legacy while moving forward with new music and performances.

Modern Drummer reported that Anika Nilles is a 42-year-old German virtuoso drummer. She has built an impressive career as both a live performer and solo artist. Her credentials include work with legendary guitarist Jeff Beck, where she demonstrated the technical prowess and adaptability that caught Rush’s attention. Beyond her session work, Nilles has cultivated a strong presence as a YouTuber and independent musician, showcasing her versatility across multiple genres and styles.

Ultimate Classic Rock revealed that the band’s reunion tour is being branded as the “Fifty Something” tour. This tour celebrates over 50 years of Rush’s music. It will mark the band’s first performances since Neil Peart’s death and is scheduled to begin in 2026. Dates are planned across major venues in the US, Canada, and Mexico throughout the year. The tour represents not just a return to the stage, but a celebration of the band’s enduring legacy and influence on rock music.

Loudwire noted that Rush’s Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson expressed confidence in Nilles’ ability to honor Neil Peart’s legacy. They are not attempting to replicate his irreplaceable contributions. The band’s choice of Nilles over more commercially famous drummers reflects their commitment to finding an artist with the technical skill and artistic integrity necessary to interpret Rush’s complex and demanding catalog. This decision underscores the band’s respect for Peart’s memory and their desire to maintain the musical standards that defined Rush’s career.
