Journey guitarist Neal Schon has recently appeared in an interview with Masa Ito’s Rock City and reflected on the creation process of the band’s latest album, ‘Freedom.’

Journey initially became a part of the music scene with the self-titled debut album in 1975. They achieved huge commercial success from the mid-’70s to the mid-’80s. The band released many hit songs while Steve Perry was on the lead vocal at that period. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017, including Perry, who was not a member then.

The seventh studio album, ‘Escape, was the most successful one, peaking at number one on the Billboard 200. The following record, ‘Frontiers,’ was close to the previous one’s success. The album reached number two on the Billboard 200 with the hit songs like ‘After the Fall’ and ‘Faithfully.’ It also became number six on the UK Albums Chart.

Journey released its fifteenth studio album named ‘Freedom’ on July 8, 2022, eleven years after their latest record, ‘Eclipse,’ which came out in 2011. Randy Jackson contributed to the album as the bassist replacing the founding member Ross Valory who was dismissed in 2020. The record became the longest Journey album with fifteen songs.

During an interview, Neal Schon talked about their most recent album by indicating its length. He explained that he recorded his song ideas on his cell phone during the creation process. As the guitarist mentioned, he recorded and listened to them daily to create quality songs to deliver to the audience. Schon has stated that the fans have heard 16 pieces in the new album out of the 35 songs the members were working on together.

Neal Schon said in his words:

“I have thousands of ideas in my little new cell phone. This cell phone is like the cassette recorder I used in the ’80s when I accumulated many ideas for songwriting. I have thousands of ideas in there that I loop and come up with every day or every other day. When I went into the studio, I went through some of the ideas I came up with just recently before we went to the studio, hand-picked a few, and then made up some on the spot. We had many more than 16 tracks that you’re getting. We had like about 35 that we were working on.”
