Journey guitarist Neal Schon recently responded to a fan’s criticism about the band’s current lineup. He addressed the comment in a statement shared on Twitter.
The response came after a Journey fan wrote on social media that without original vocalist Steve Perry, the band has lost its authenticity.
The fan said, “Without Steve Perry, they are just a cover band.”
“Yeah, that’s why we continue to sell out everywhere lol,” Schon said in his Twitter response.
The exchange highlights ongoing discussions among fans about Journey’s evolution since Steve Perry’s departure from the band. The guitarist’s comment points to the band’s continued commercial success with their current touring lineup.
This debate over Journey’s authenticity reflects a broader conversation about the band’s significant lineup changes over the decades. Wikipedia reported that Perry left Journey in 1987, citing worsening relations with Schon as well as personal reasons related to his mother’s illness and death.
Since Perry’s departure, Journey has undergone numerous lineup changes. Schon remains as the last original member. The band found new life when Wikipedia noted that Arnel Pineda joined as lead vocalist in 2007 after being discovered on YouTube, bringing a vocal style reminiscent of Perry’s classic sound.
Despite these changes, Journey continues to enjoy strong commercial success. Journey Tour documented that the band regularly sells out tours and performs signature hits like “Don’t Stop Believin'” and “Open Arms,” songs that remain fan favorites and staples of their live shows.
This ongoing popularity underlines Schon’s point that the band remains a significant live act despite shifts in the lineup. The continuing success amid change reflects Journey’s ability to maintain their classic rock and melodic style. They blend powerful guitar work with anthemic vocals that resonate strongly with audiences today.
