Motley Crue’s Tommy Lee Disses MTV And John 5 Supports Him

Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee recently shared a post on his official Instagram page celebrating the 40th anniversary of MTV. Being the sarcastic rocker he always has been, Lee humorously thanked MTV for 15 years of music, referring to the times when the channel was airing nothing but music. Fellow musician John 5 shared his opinion in the comments section and agreed with his close friend.

As many of you know, when MTV first launched on August 1, 1981, the channel was solely related to music, and thus, they aired music videos and music shows presented by television personalities known as video jockeys. The viewers listened to rock music when the channel was first established, as MTV was initially promoted with the words ‘Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll.

As the years passed, MTV significantly reduced its airing of rock music videos, contributing to the controversial statement of ‘rock is dead.’ The channel started airing reality shows for teenagers that included teen pop music due to the international success bands such as Spice Girls, the Backstreet Boys, and NSYNC. Since then, MTV gradually toned down its focus on music in favor of reality programming and has been mostly airing mainstream music.

It was MTV’s 40th anniversary a few days ago and many musicians celebrated the channel’s fourth decade of airing music via their social media posts. Tommy Lee also joined the club and shared a post on his official Instagram page dedicated to MTV. However, the drummer didn’t exactly glorify the channel, he rather made fun of its changed direction.

In his post, the Mötley Crüe drummer revealed a picture on which there was a statement that thanked MTV for 15 years of music while celebrating its 40th anniversary. While sharing this sarcastic post, Lee didn’t feel the need to add another caption as it pretty much spoke for itself and fans loved the shade.

The statement in the IG post follows:

“MTV turned 40 this year! Thank you for 15 years of music.

In addition to numerous fan comments, fellow rocker John 5, who is also Tommy Lee’s close friend, shared a comment under the post stating that the picture says nothing but the truth. After seeing the comment, fans actually loved John 5’s attitude and it became one of the most liked comments.

John 5 commented:

“That’s the truth.”
