Mitch Malloy recently shared insights into Van Halen’s internal dynamics, discussing the band’s leadership structure in an interview featured on Harmless Dave.

When asked who is primarily calling the shots within Van Halen, Malloy pointed to multiple key figures in the band’s decision-making process. He explained that drummer Alex Van Halen has historically held significant influence over the group’s direction.

“Alex, I think was always quietly running things,” Malloy said. “That’s the vibe I got when I was there. He’s the older brother, and the older brother is always the older brother. I mean, it’s just always that way. And he’s really smart. He really is, especially for a drummer.”

Malloy recalled witnessing the creative dynamic between the Van Halen brothers firsthand while at the band’s 5150 studio. He described a moment where Eddie Van Halen brought a musical idea to his brother. The two engaged in a collaborative—and sometimes contentious—songwriting process.

“I mean there was a moment when Eddie had an idea when we were there. He had a riff and he was like, ‘Al, I got this idea.’ And he and Al started playing and I was sitting, you know, in the chair at 5150 as they were constructing, you know, a song and Al had definite opinions about things, you know, that Ed was playing. I mean, he went up against him. It was cool to watch. Kind of kind of scary, actually, too.”

According to Malloy, the current leadership extends beyond Alex. Wolfgang Van Halen and David Lee Roth also play significant roles in the band’s operations. “Al, I think really at this point especially, would be running things but also Wolfie has a big play in it as well. I mean, Ed really kind of handed the the keys to him, you know, and so I think it’s really those two guys, but then they have David Lee Roth as well in the mix and I think he has a say in things. In fact, I know that to a degree. I still have some insider information there, but I don’t know. I mean, they’re not calling me and that’s fine.”

Malloy’s observations about Van Halen’s leadership carry particular weight given his brief but significant involvement with the band during a pivotal moment in their history. His firsthand experience at 5150 studios provides rare insight into the creative and interpersonal dynamics that shape the band’s direction.

Van Halen News Desk reported that Malloy auditioned for Van Halen in 1996 by recording several tracks at 5150 studios with Eddie, Alex, and Michael Anthony. This was a critical period for the band following Sammy Hagar’s departure. Malloy was being considered as a potential new frontman. His time in the studio during this transition gave him an intimate look at how the band members interacted and made decisions together.

The circumstances surrounding Malloy’s brief tenure with Van Halen reveal much about the band’s internal power structure. Loudwire documented that Malloy’s hopes of joining the band were dashed when Van Halen unexpectedly appeared with David Lee Roth at the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards. This effectively signaled that the original frontman would be returning. The unexpected turn of events left Malloy in limbo, though Eddie Van Halen later apologized for the miscommunication surrounding the MTV appearance.

Despite the disappointment of not joining Van Halen permanently, Malloy maintained a meaningful connection with the band’s leader. i95 Rocks noted that Malloy maintained a friendship with Eddie Van Halen, who later bankrolled his 2000 album ‘Shine.’ Malloy recalled that “Ed was like my big brother back then.” This enduring relationship suggests that Malloy’s insider knowledge comes not just from his brief studio sessions, but from years of maintaining connections within the Van Halen circle.

Malloy’s comments about Alex Van Halen’s leadership role align with the drummer’s reputation as a stabilizing force within the band. Melodic Rock highlighted that Alex Van Halen’s steady presence has contributed to maintaining the band’s rhythm section and direction through various lineup transitions over the decades. His willingness to challenge Eddie’s musical ideas, as Malloy witnessed firsthand, demonstrates that the band’s creative process involves genuine collaboration and debate among its members. Alex plays a crucial role in shaping the final product.
