Mike Portnoy Spills His Favorite Movie Directors Including Quentin Tarantino

Former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy revealed the movie directors that he admired the most, including Stanley Kubrick, David Lynch, and Quentin Tarantino with many others during his appearance on one of the recent episodes of Talk Is Jericho.

Apart from his remarkable talent and interest in various music genres, Mike Portnoy has had such a great interest in movies that watching and sharing his ideas about them have turned into Portnoy’s hobby. As a movie geek, he has his lists which consist of his favorite movies and directors, but according to him, it was hard to decide the top ten directors.

During his interview, Mike Portnoy revealed that Stanley Kubrick, who directed many iconic movies such as ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ and ‘The Shining,’ ranked number on his top ten list. The second is another accomplished director, David Lynch, and he’s the person behind ‘Eraserhead,’ ‘Mulholland Drive,’ and ‘Inland Empire.’ However, choosing the number three was very hard for Portnoy.

Portnoy named Quentin Tarantino as the number three on his list, but he also admitted that he couldn’t decide whether he should choose Tarantino or not because of Paul Thomas Anderson’s influence on him. Eventually, he decided on Tarantino by showing his ongoing success in every movie that he directed as the reason behind his decision, even though Portnoy loved Anderson’s ‘Magnolia’ and ‘Boogie Nights’ so much.

Portnoy shared his ideas about his favorite directors, saying:

“I have my list of top ten. Tarantino is number three which sounds like ‘why isn’t he number one?’ but he is only behind Stanley Kubrick and David Lynch. So he is my number three. For a long time, I have been wrestling with Tarantino vs. Paul Thomas Anderson. They both came out during the 80s. Anderson came out with ‘Boogie Nights’ and ‘Magnolia’ as my favorites of all time.

Tarantino came out with ‘Reservoir Dogs’ and ‘Pulp Fiction’ as also my favorites of all time. For many years, they were neck to neck but through the years, Tarantino has surpassed Anderson. I think there are no modern directors with a strong body like Tarantino. Every single one of them is a masterpiece.”

Consequently, following this interview, Mike Portnoy might get and accept an offer from Quentin Tarantino because he described him as one of his favorite director alongside Kubrick and Lynch, even though he hasn’t participated in any movies so far.
