Dream Theater co-founder Mike Portnoy recently shared his thoughts on the evolution of modern drumming. He praised the talent of today’s social media drummers in an interview with El Estepario Siberiano.

“Now — I mean, I think that’s probably why the evolution of drumming has taken off to the level it is at now,” Portnoy said. “Because there’s so many tools for drummers today, to see people like you, and all these amazing drummers that are on TikTok, Instagram, or YouTube.”
He emphasized how the accessibility of these platforms continues to inspire him despite his decades of experience.
“Now, there’s just endless inspiration,” he continued. “For me, as a 58 year old man, I’m still inspired by all these drummers; these up-and-coming drummers doing stuff I can’t even imagine. And it’s just because I think today’s drummers have those tools that we didn’t have.”
