Mike Portnoy recently responded to winning the Progressive Drummer of the Year award for the second consecutive year. He shared his thoughts on the nature of musical competition in a statement posted on Instagram.
The drummer expressed gratitude for the recognition. He emphasized his philosophy about musical competition and artistic expression.
“Thank you to everybody that voted in this year’s Drumeo awards! I am honored once again to have been voted ‘Progressive Drummer Of The Year’ for the 2nd year in a row!” Portnoy said.
He continued to elaborate on his perspective about drumming as an art form rather than a competitive sport.
“As I always say, drumming is not a sport or contest that can measured…there’s no ‘bests,’ just ‘favorites’… It’s all subjective and everybody brings ‘their thing’ to what they do…but I always appreciate the support and acknowledgment…thank you!” he added.
Portnoy’s latest recognition adds to an already impressive collection of accolades spanning decades of progressive music excellence.
Wikipedia reported that the drummer has won 32 awards from Modern Drummer magazine throughout his career. This establishes him as one of the most decorated musicians in the progressive rock genre. His technical prowess and innovative approach to drumming have made him a standout figure in the music industry since his early days with Dream Theater.
The 2025 Drumeo Awards specifically highlighted Portnoy’s continued influence in shaping the progressive music landscape. Drumeo noted that his structured phrasing, rhythmic intensity, and distinctive musical storytelling were key factors in his recognition for the second consecutive year.
Portnoy’s recent achievements come during a significant period in his career. He rejoined Dream Theater in 2023 after a 13-year absence from the band he co-founded. Metal Injection revealed that his return followed successful collaborations including John Petrucci’s solo album and work with Liquid Tension Experiment.
The reunion has proven fruitful for both Portnoy and Dream Theater. The band received their fourth career Grammy nomination and released their first album with the drummer back in the lineup. This milestone represents not only a personal achievement for Portnoy but also marks a new chapter for one of progressive metal’s most influential bands.
