Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy recently discussed his reunion with the band and addressed the controlling issues that contributed to his departure, sharing his thoughts in an interview with Overdrive Live.

Portnoy reflected on how the band dynamic has evolved since his return, acknowledging his past behavior and the positive changes that have occurred.

When asked about how different it was when he rejoined the band, Portnoy explained his perspective on the reunion.

“Well, it’s the same in a lot of ways where we’re where it feels so natural. It feels like I was never gone to be honest. It immediately felt like coming back home again to family,” he said. “I guess the difference is that we’re just older and therefore wiser and a little more mellow. I know I am. I know when I left the band in 2010, I was very much a control freak. But, you know, through time, and through all the years away and all the different things I had been a part of and all the things that Dream Theater did without me, I think we all kind of just kind of grew older and wiser.”

The drummer emphasized how the band’s approach to decision-making has improved since his return.

“So, it’s actually the best dynamic of the band ever because when I left like I said, I was very controlling about everything. Whereas now, there’s more of a band feeling, you know, more of sharing responsibilities and making decisions together that maybe weren’t made together back my first time around,” he continued.

When directly asked whether controlling behavior was the main reason for his departure, Portnoy chose to focus on the present rather than revisiting past conflicts.

“It really isn’t as simple as that. There’s a lot of reasons and it’s been covered to death. I mean there’s been hundreds of interviews talking about it. So I’d rather not talk about the sad times from 2010. I’d rather talk about the happy times from 2026,” he said.

Portnoy’s return to Dream Theater marks the end of a significant chapter in the band’s history that began over a decade ago.

Modern Drummer reported that Dream Theater officially welcomed back their founding drummer after a remarkable 13-year absence from the iconic progressive metal band. The reunion came in late 2023, bringing together the original trio that formed the band’s foundation.

Dream Theater’s official website confirmed that Portnoy reunited with guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung, the trio who originally formed the band at the Berklee College of Music in 1985. This reunion restored the core lineup that helped establish Dream Theater as one of progressive metal’s most influential acts.

The path back to Dream Theater wasn’t immediate. Metal Injection noted that the reconnection started with collaborations like Petrucci’s 2020 solo album Terminal Velocity and the 2022 Liquid Tension Experiment record with keyboardist Jordan Rudess. These projects helped rebuild the musical relationship between the longtime collaborators.

During his absence from Dream Theater, the band continued with drummer Mike Mangini, who replaced Portnoy and remained with the group throughout the 13-year period. The reunion represents not just a return to form for the band, but also a resolution of the creative differences that led to the original split in 2010.
