Mike Portnoy shared his thoughts about Dream Theater’s reunion in an interview with SiriusXM’s Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk. He expressed gratitude that the band avoided the fate of other legendary groups that never reconciled.
The drummer highlighted the importance of Dream Theater’s reunion by comparing it to other famous bands that remained divided.
“I’m so thankful that it’s come back full circle,” Portnoy said. “It would’ve been really sad if we never did reunite. I’ve seen other bands, like Pink Floyd with Roger Waters, or Genesis with Peter Gabriel, certain bands that never do reunite. And as a fan, it’s a shame.”
Portnoy elaborated on the poetic nature of the band’s current chapter.
“I would love to see those lineups together again before it all ends,” he continued. “So for us to be back together again and celebrating the 40th anniversary of the band and riding off into the sunset together, it’s poetic. It’s the way it should be, really. And I’m so glad that we’re here together again.”
The reunion holds special significance for both the band and their fanbase. It marks the end of a 13-year separation that began with Portnoy’s departure in 2010.
Louder Sound reported that the reunion materialized through gradual healing of personal relationships. Portnoy reconnected with John Petrucci and James LaBrie over time. His initial departure in 2010 had created a significant void in the progressive metal band’s lineup, leading to years of reunion speculation.
Modern Drummer documented that Portnoy’s return coincided with Mike Mangini’s departure. Mangini had held the drummer position since 2011. This transition marked a homecoming for the band’s classic lineup as they prepared for their milestone anniversary.
The reunion timing aligns perfectly with Dream Theater’s 40th anniversary celebrations. Wikipedia notes that the band formed in 1985 as Majesty before adopting the name Dream Theater in 1986. This makes 2025 a pivotal year for retrospective touring and commemorative activities.
The reunion has energized progressive metal fans who long hoped for the original lineup’s return. Dream Theater can now approach their anniversary celebrations with renewed vigor. The complete creative partnership that established them as progressive metal pioneers is once again intact.
The comments come as Dream Theater celebrates their 40th anniversary with Portnoy back in the lineup.
