Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy recently shared his excitement about Rush’s upcoming reunion tour. He expressed his enthusiasm for the legendary band’s return in a statement featured on Sonar FM.

Portnoy discussed his anticipation for Rush’s ‘Fifty Something’ reunion tour with new drummer Anika Nilles. He also reflected on the broader landscape of classic metal bands.

“I cannot wait to see it. I’m so curious what it’s gonna be like. They’re one of my favorite bands of all time,” Portnoy said. “And I had the honor of becoming friends with [late Rush drummer] Neil Peart for the last 10, 15 years of his life. And, yeah, I’m so happy that they’re gonna do it again. And I absolutely plan on going to see the shows and supporting them.”

The drummer also addressed the significance of Rush’s comeback amid the retirement of many iconic bands.

“Well, I’m happy to see them reunite. For the fans it’s important, because all of the classic bands are going away. Rush is thankfully coming back, but a year ago if we were having this discussion, we would say there is no Rush, there is no Van Halen, there is no more Black Sabbath, Slayer retired, Megadeth is retiring, Sepultura is retiring,” he continued. “So, yeah, we need our heroes to keep playing if they can, if they’re able to.”

Portnoy’s enthusiasm comes as Rush has already begun their return to the stage with their new lineup. Revolver Magazine reported that Rush made their live debut with new drummer Anika Nilles at Canada’s Juno Awards on March 29. They performed “Finding My Way” from their 1974 debut album while paying tribute to Neil Peart through video footage.

The choice of Anika Nilles as Rush’s new drummer represents a significant moment for the band. Live for Live Music noted that the 42-year-old German drummer previously played with Jeff Beck. She will fill Neil Peart’s considerable shoes during the Fifty Something reunion tour. Her selection marks the first time Rush has performed with a new drummer since Peart joined the band in 1974.

The reunion tour itself has expanded significantly since its initial announcement. Guitar World revealed that the tour kicks off June 7 in Los Angeles. It now extends through 2027, including dates in Europe and South America. This extended timeline gives fans worldwide multiple opportunities to witness the legendary Canadian trio’s return to live performance.

The band’s decision to return wasn’t made lightly, as they faced the challenge of moving forward without their longtime drummer and lyricist. Far Out Magazine reported that Rush initially had doubts about finding a new drummer to replace Peart. They ultimately decided to move forward with Nilles after careful consideration. The band’s return represents not just a reunion but a new chapter in their five-decade career.

Portnoy’s comments highlight both his personal connection to Rush through his friendship with the late Neil Peart and his perspective on the changing landscape of classic metal and progressive rock bands.
