Nickelback bassist Mike Kroeger has opened up about the band’s deliberate decision to slow down their release cycle.
Kroeger addressed why the band took a more relaxed approach to completing their upcoming album, Everything Under the Sun. The album is set to drop on October 30.
“The genesis of this thing was to kind of relax and take our time getting to it and getting it done,” Kroeger said. “You could say we took an extra year between albums. We just kind of wanted to leave some space.”
He pointed to the band’s experience during the COVID period as a key influence on this decision.
“We found that we had a pretty good result of that during COVID, we went away for a little while and our people reacted really well to a little bit of a reduced diet of us,” he continued. “We didn’t do anything in a particular hurry. We just didn’t feel as urgent about getting it done as maybe we have in the past. It’s been a cycle, really tight for us. We make a record, go on the road, immediately as soon as we get off the road, get in the studio.”
Kroeger emphasized that the band’s priority this time around was quality over speed.
“This time was a little bit different and more of a relaxed pace,” he said. “Just trying to do the best work we can and not so concerned with hitting timelines.”
Everything Under the Sun will be Nickelback’s 11th studio album. It arrives four years after their 2022 record Get Rollin’ — their longest gap between studio releases in recent memory.
The band has already released lead single “Rattle the Cage,” giving fans an early taste of the new material. The track features a guest appearance from Motley Crue guitarist John 5. Kroeger described the collaboration as part of a broader desire to push beyond the band’s established sound with this record.
Everything Under the Sun will be released via Virgin Music Group on October 30, 2026.
