‘After 20 years of living in each other’s pockets, there are many frustrations,’ Avory said. ‘It just felt for me it was time to change.’

The drummer also addressed rumors about a potential reunion when questioned about Ray Davies’ reaction to his departure. He responded to claims that Dave Davies had asked him to rejoin.

‘Dave didn’t ask,’ Avory clarified. ‘It was Ray via a comment from Jake Riviera, but the time just wasn’t right; only a year had gone by.’

Avory’s comments come amid ongoing speculation about The Kinks’ future and the possibility of the original lineup reuniting after decades apart.

The drummer has previously expressed skepticism about a full-band reunion. He cited various obstacles that have persisted over the years. Best Classic Bands reported that Avory stated in a 2023 interview that he doesn’t believe a reunion is possible now. He pointed to health issues and the differing creative visions between the Davies brothers as major barriers.

‘I don’t think it’s possible now,’ Avory said in that interview. He added that Dave and Ray ‘wanted to do it one way, and Ray wanted to do it the other.’ This ongoing tension between the founding members has been a recurring theme throughout The Kinks’ history. It continues to influence reunion discussions.

The band recently marked a significant milestone with their 60th anniversary. They celebrated six decades since their formation in 1963. Best Classic Bands noted that this anniversary was commemorated with a series of anthology releases. These included ‘The Journey – Part 3’ released in July 2025, which highlights the band’s transformative years and enduring legacy.

Despite the challenges surrounding a potential reunion, The Kinks remain one of Britain’s most influential rock bands. Their impact on music history continues to be recognized and celebrated through various retrospective projects and anniversary releases.

The interview provides insight into the internal dynamics of one of Britain’s most influential rock bands during a pivotal period in their history.
