Stryper frontman Michael Sweet recently provided an update on his cancer diagnosis and addressed fan concerns about the band potentially hiring a new singer. He shared his thoughts in a post on Facebook.

Sweet’s update focused on his recent medical consultation regarding a thyroid nodule that was found to be malignant.

“I wanted to give you all an update. I met with my doctor/team and apparently I’m a prime candidate for ‘active surveillance,'” Sweet said. “What that means is they’re going to do an ultrasound in 6 months to see if there has been any change to the nodule in my right thyroid.”

He continued to explain the current treatment approach and his optimistic outlook.

“It is malignant, but the good news is it’s self contained and surrounded by healthy tissue. It’s also small enough that they feel it makes more sense to ‘keep an eye on it’ instead of rushing surgery at this point in time,” he explained. “They feel that surgery itself is more risky than the nodule itself. At least for now. So, I’ll have an ulstrasound in June and we’ll go from there. My hopes and prayers are to see it disappear. Maybe through diet, hope and prayers, it will.”

Following his health update, a Stryper fan asked about rumors regarding the band seeking a new lead singer during Sweet’s treatment.

“Not true. I said something in an interview stating that if we ever need to do that, I will just play guitar,” Sweet responded. “But I did not say that we are doing that now. The Internet is out of control.”

Sweet’s next medical check-up is scheduled for June 2025.

Sweet’s health concerns first emerged when he noticed persistent changes in his singing voice. This led to his medical evaluation and subsequent diagnosis.

Blabbermouth reported that Sweet has been diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer, which is the most common type of thyroid cancer. This form of cancer is generally slow-growing and has a favorable prognosis when caught early. This aligns with his doctors’ optimistic outlook and decision to pursue active surveillance rather than immediate surgery.

Despite his health challenges, Sweet and Stryper remain committed to their musical projects. Parade noted that the band plans to continue recording their new album on schedule. Sweet previously stated that recording would begin in late December. The frontman has indicated that any treatment steps, including possible surgery, would be scheduled after the tracking process is completed.

The 62-year-old musician has maintained a positive attitude throughout his diagnosis. SurvivorNet revealed that both Sweet and his medical team feel optimistic about his prognosis. This has allowed him to focus on his music while managing his health condition.

Sweet’s transparency about his health journey and his quick response to fan concerns about Stryper’s future demonstrate his commitment to maintaining open communication with the band’s loyal fanbase during this challenging time.
