Stryper frontman Michael Sweet recently provided a detailed update on his ongoing vocal health challenges following his thyroid cancer diagnosis. He shared the information in a comprehensive statement on Facebook.

The statement outlined multiple vocal issues Sweet is currently facing, based on recent medical examinations and specialist consultations.

“I recently got scoped by a voice specialist and he went over everything going on with my voice,” Sweet said. “First – I’ve got some ‘thickening’ of the vocal folds. Instead of smoothness, there’s some rigidness. Age related. Nothing that requires surgery or that surgery can help.”

Sweet continued to detail additional complications affecting his voice.

“Second – I’ve got what’s called ‘Vocal Tremor.’ It affects the control of your voice and causes some shakiness,” he explained. “They prescribed medication that can help (propranolol) but its side effects can be a little problematic. Especially with the porcelain god.”

The musician also addressed other health concerns impacting his vocal performance.

“Third – I have fairly severe post nasal drip and a deviated septum. Not much to do about that except steam, neti pot and eating foods that don’t cause congestion,” Sweet noted. “Fourth – Thyroid cancer. I’ll be getting checked again in June to see where I’m at with that. It feels a little more ‘crowded’ in there but hopefully and prayerfully, it won’t change what I still have too much.”

Despite these challenges, Sweet remains committed to his vocal recovery efforts.

“I’ve been working hard to try to work through my vocal issues (nebulizer, steamer, sprays, gargles and voice therapy),” he said. “My mid range is still difficult to navigate but oddly enough, my high range (scream) has been much easier to perform. I really think the VocalMist Nebulizer has really helped me with that!”

Sweet concluded his update with gratitude for fan support and determination to continue performing.

“Anyway, all that to say – I’m doing everything that I can to overcome my obstacles,” he stated. “Thank you all for praying and believing.”

The singer is scheduled for another cancer check-up in June to monitor his thyroid condition.

Sweet’s health journey has been marked by both challenges and encouraging medical insights since his initial diagnosis. His Instagram updates revealed that Michael Sweet was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer, a slow-growing form that his doctor is optimistic about managing.

The specific type of cancer Sweet is battling provides some reassurance for both the musician and his fans. Papillary thyroid cancer is generally considered less aggressive than other forms of thyroid cancer. This aligns with the positive outlook his medical team has maintained throughout his treatment process.

In recent social media posts, Sweet has emphasized the encouraging aspects of his diagnosis while remaining realistic about the ongoing monitoring required. The slow-growing nature of papillary thyroid cancer means that with proper medical supervision and regular check-ups, many patients can maintain their quality of life and continue their professional activities.

Sweet’s transparency about his health struggles has resonated with fans and fellow musicians alike. He continues to balance his medical treatment with his commitment to Stryper and his music career. His detailed updates provide insight into the complex challenges that professional vocalists face when dealing with both age-related vocal changes and serious health conditions.

The combination of his thyroid cancer diagnosis and multiple vocal issues presents a unique set of obstacles for the veteran metal singer. Yet his determination to continue performing and his openness about the medical realities he faces demonstrate his resilience and dedication to his craft.
