Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament’s recent comment on a social media post has sparked speculation about the band’s search for a new drummer, as reported on Instagram.

The comment came in response to a post by Nine Inch Nails drummer Josh Freese. Freese shared content featuring himself with Jane’s Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins.

“Fun yesterday with long time friend and fellow old school DW artist, Stephen Perkins,” Freese wrote in the caption of his post.

Ament responded to the post with enthusiasm about both drummers.

“Two of the best ever. Shake & Bake!” Ament commented.

The bassist’s praise for both musicians quickly caught the attention of Pearl Jam fans. They began speculating about potential replacements for Matt Cameron, who left the band a couple of months ago.

One fan directly asked about the implications of Ament’s comment: “Which one will be the new PJ drummer?”

Another fan expressed hope about the possibilities: “I sure hope it’s one of these two. Either would be amazing.”

The exchange has fueled rumors that Pearl Jam may be considering either Freese or Perkins as Cameron’s replacement.

The timing of Ament’s comment has added weight to the speculation. Both drummers find themselves in unique positions within the rock music landscape.

Alternative Nation reported that Matt Cameron had been with Pearl Jam for 27 years before his departure. This makes his replacement one of the most significant lineup changes in the band’s history. Cameron’s long tenure with the Seattle grunge legends means finding a suitable replacement requires someone with both technical skill and the ability to fit into the band’s established dynamic.

Stephen Perkins’ availability has become particularly relevant following recent developments with Jane’s Addiction. Drumming News Network noted that Jane’s Addiction officially announced their disbandment in December 2024. This followed an onstage altercation in September 2024. This development has made Perkins newly available for other projects, potentially opening the door for a collaboration with Pearl Jam.

Josh Freese maintains a packed schedule despite recent changes in his own career trajectory. Alternative Nation indicated that Freese continues his work with Nine Inch Nails, Weezer, The Vandals, and solo projects. This continues even after parting ways with Foo Fighters in May 2025. His extensive experience across multiple high-profile bands has established him as one of rock’s most versatile and sought-after drummers.

The speculation surrounding Pearl Jam’s drummer search reflects the band’s continued relevance in the rock music scene. Fans eagerly anticipate any official announcements about the band’s future lineup and potential touring plans.
