Dave Mustaine recently made an official offer for a potential Megadeth and Metallica tour. He shared his thoughts on the possibility in an interview with Revolver Magazine.
The Megadeth frontman expressed his belief that a joint tour between the two metal giants would be beneficial for both bands and their relationship.
“I think what needs to happen is there needs to be a Megadeth/Metallica tour. Period. That would, I’m sure, make everything right,” Mustaine said. “We could hang out. Spend time together. But I know they don’t really tour like we do. I mean, when we go out on tour, we play many, many shows.”
Mustaine also reflected on past interactions with his former Metallica bandmates. He shared a memorable moment from a recent encounter.
“If it’s meant to be, I’m sure I’ll see those guys,” he continued. “I remember we played up in San Francisco at the Cow Palace, and James told me he wanted me to play ‘My Last Words’, because that was his favorite song. I thought that was really cool. Thank you, James. To say that you had a favorite song of mine, that was really nice.”
The comments come as Mustaine has previously indicated he’s considering retirement. This makes the potential tour offer particularly significant for metal fans.
This proposal arrives at a pivotal moment for both bands. Mustaine’s comments coincide with Megadeth’s preparation for their final chapter. The timing adds weight to his reconciliatory gesture toward his former bandmates.
The Mosh reported that Mustaine made these statements during the press run for Megadeth’s impending final studio album, which is due January 23. The farewell tour will begin in February and extend up to five years. This marks the end of an era for the thrash metal pioneers. Mustaine’s tone in this interview is notably less antagonistic than in 2023. It reflects a more reconciliatory approach toward his former bandmates after decades of rivalry and occasional tension.
The history between these metal titans runs deep. Their last collaborative performance dates back over a decade. Spectrum FM noted that Megadeth and Metallica last shared the stage during the “Big Four” series of concerts in 2010 and 2011, alongside Slayer and Anthrax. These legendary shows brought together the four founding fathers of thrash metal. They created unforgettable moments for metal fans worldwide.
As a gesture of respect and closure, Parade revealed that Mustaine has recorded a new version of Metallica’s “Ride the Lightning” for Megadeth’s final self-titled album. This track holds special significance as Mustaine co-wrote it during his time with Metallica before his departure in 1983. The inclusion of this song represents a full-circle moment in the complex relationship between the two bands.
The proposed tour would represent more than just a commercial venture for both bands. After four decades of rivalry, tension, and occasional reconciliation, a joint farewell tour could provide the perfect ending to one of metal’s most storied relationships. It would give fans a chance to witness history while allowing both bands to close this chapter on a positive note.
