Former Guns N’ Roses and Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum has addressed the possibility of a Velvet Revolver reunion with Halestorm frontwoman Lzzy Hale on lead vocals.
The discussion centered on whether Sorum would be open to reforming the band with Hale stepping into the vocalist role, a lineup change from the group’s earlier configurations.
“Whew. Yeah, I mean, come on. I’d do it, [the comeback with Lzzy Hale on vocals],” Sorum said. “I don’t know what those other two guys [Slash and Duff] are up to, but give ’em a call. [Laughs]”
Sorum’s comments suggest he would welcome the idea, though he noted uncertainty about the current plans of former bandmates Slash and Duff McKagan. No formal announcement regarding a Velvet Revolver reunion has been made.
Sorum’s openness to a revival doesn’t come out of nowhere. He has spent much of the past year publicly reflecting on Velvet Revolver’s legacy. Those remarks help explain why the idea of bringing the band back with a new voice at the microphone appeals to him.
Velvet Revolver formed in 2002 when Sorum, Slash and McKagan left Guns N’ Roses and teamed up with guitarist Dave Kushner. The band spent roughly two years searching for a singer before Scott Weiland joined as frontman, a search that ultimately shaped the group’s sound and trajectory.
Sorum has repeatedly said the band’s story feels unfinished. He has argued that Velvet Revolver had the talent and momentum to reach a level comparable to Guns N’ Roses, but that the band simply didn’t stay together long enough to realize that potential.
Since Velvet Revolver’s dissolution, efforts to find a replacement vocalist and revive the band have repeatedly stalled. Sorum has continued to stay active musically in the years since, touring with Kings of Chaos and performing alongside artists such as Billy Gibbons. Slash and McKagan, meanwhile, eventually returned to Guns N’ Roses.
Sorum has also spoken about making peace with Weiland’s legacy in recent years. That sentiment adds weight to his current willingness to revisit Velvet Revolver’s unfinished chapter, this time with Hale as a potential new voice for the band.
