Matt Cameron has announced his departure from Pearl Jam after 27 years as the band’s drummer. Both the musician and the band shared heartfelt statements on Pearl Jam’s Facebook page.

Cameron shared his decision in a personal message reflecting on his time with the iconic grunge band.

“After 27 fantastic years, I have taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam,” Cameron said. “Much love and respect to Jeff, Ed, Mike and Stone for inviting me into the band in 1998 and for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, filled with friendships, artistry, challenges and laughter.”

The drummer expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported the band throughout his tenure.

“I am forever grateful to the crew, staff and fans the world over,” he continued. “It’s been an incredible journey. More to follow. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Peace and Love, Matt Cameron.”

Pearl Jam also released their own statement honoring Cameron’s contributions to the band.

“From being one of our first musical heroes in the bands Skinyard and the mighty Soundgarden, to playing on our first demos in 1990, Matt Cameron has been a singular and true powerhouse of a musician and drummer,” the band stated. “He has propelled the last 27 years of Pearl Jam live shows and studio recordings. It was a deeply important chapter for our group and we wish him well always. He will be deeply missed and is forever our friend in art and music. We love you Matt.”

Cameron’s departure marks the end of a significant era for Pearl Jam. He became the band’s longest-serving drummer and helped shape their sound for nearly three decades.

96.9 The Wolf reported that Cameron’s tenure with Pearl Jam made him the longest-serving drummer in the band’s history. He surpassed previous drummers who had much shorter stints with the group. His consistent presence behind the kit provided stability during the band’s evolution from grunge pioneers to rock legends.

The drummer’s musical journey with Pearl Jam began in 1998 when he joined the band following his work with Soundgarden. Pearl Jam Community noted that Cameron had already established himself as a respected figure in the Seattle music scene before joining Pearl Jam. He had been part of influential bands like Skinyard and Soundgarden that helped define the Pacific Northwest sound.

Cameron’s departure has sparked widespread speculation about Pearl Jam’s future direction and potential replacement drummers. Alternative Nation revealed that rumors have emerged suggesting Cameron might join the Foo Fighters as their new drummer. These reports remain unconfirmed and speculative at this time.

The timing of Cameron’s announcement has left fans wondering about the band’s upcoming plans and whether Pearl Jam will continue touring and recording with a new drummer. His departure represents one of the most significant lineup changes in Pearl Jam’s recent history. It closes a chapter that spanned multiple decades of influential rock music.
