M. Shadows recently addressed how Avenged Sevenfold approaches creative evolution versus fan expectations. He shared his perspective in an interview with Korno Espinosa.

The Avenged Sevenfold frontman explained the band’s philosophy on balancing artistic growth with audience demands. He emphasized their commitment to forward-thinking creativity.

“Yeah, we don’t really think about what fans expect. We just do what we think is cool,” M. Shadows said. “We’re constantly listening to new artists, we’re constantly being inspired by different things and newer things, and so we don’t expect our audience to understand where we’re at until we put something out. And we don’t feel the need at this point to handhold them.”

The vocalist elaborated on the band’s stance regarding fans who prefer their earlier material.

“I think they’ve grown up with us and they’re older, and if they want that from us, they have it. And if they want the old stuff, they can go back and listen to the old stuff,” he continued. “But we’re not gonna try to rehash or retread any ground just to make somebody have a second-rate version of something we did in the past. Everything we did at a certain time was ahead of the curve or groundbreaking to us — at least that’s where we were mentally when we did ‘Waking The Fallen.'”

M. Shadows further emphasized the band’s commitment to innovation across their discography.

“It was a different thing than what was out. It was different than everything else. When we did ‘City Of Evil’, it wasn’t a repeat of ‘Waking The Fallen’,” he said. “And so we continue with that mindset, and we just wanna lead people somewhere new. We don’t really wanna make them feel too comfortable. I think that isn’t very exciting to us.”

This philosophy of constant evolution has defined Avenged Sevenfold’s career trajectory since their formation in 1999. Each album marks a distinct departure from their previous work.

The band’s commitment to reinvention becomes evident when examining their discography. Wikipedia documented their evolution from the metalcore foundations of Waking the Fallen (2003) to the hard rock experimentation of City of Evil (2005). Their self-titled release (2007) further expanded their sound. This pattern continued with later works like the progressive metal concepts explored in The Stage (2016) and their most recent experimental effort Life Is But a Dream… (2023).

The band’s individual members have also embraced creative exploration beyond the group’s collective work. Blabbermouth reported that guitarist Zacky Vengeance recently launched his solo project with the single “Dark Horse” in 2025. The track blends Americana influences into his traditionally hard rock approach. This solo venture demonstrates how the band’s philosophy of artistic growth extends to their individual pursuits.

Avenged Sevenfold’s willingness to challenge expectations will continue into 2026 as they prepare for their upcoming tour. KFMX confirmed that the band has scheduled tour dates from January 14 through February 3. A summer leg will run from July 25 through August 27 alongside Good Charlotte. This touring schedule will give fans the opportunity to experience how the band’s latest material translates to live performances.

The band’s approach to creative independence has also extended to their recent releases. Avenged Sevenfold has debuted new material in unconventional ways. Their latest track was featured in the recent season of “Call of Duty” Black Ops 7 and was released fully independently. This continues their ambition to control their artistic output and distribution methods.
