Halestorm’s Lzzy Hale recalled an emotional and unforgettable moment from MusiCares’ Person of the Year Gala in her latest conversation with WDHA’s Reconnect With Rockers. She stated that one of the Joni Mitchell covers was so touching and unique that it made her cry.

The non-profit organization MusiCares aims to help people who work in the music industry during financial, personal, or medical crises. Their program includes emergency financial assistance, addiction recovery, outreach and leadership activities, and senior housing, which some musicians found hard to reach, especially at the beginning of their careers. They also organize events and honor artists with the ‘Person of the Year Award.’

This year, Joni Mitchell gained the title of ‘The Person of the Year,’ and the ceremony took place on April 1 in Las Vegas. The event’s performers were Leon Bridges, Chaka Khan, Allison Russell, Billy Porter, John Legend, Jon Batiste, and many more. They were celebrating the musician’s legacy and honoring her contribution to music. The star-studded lineup showed their love and respect for the musician.

Moreover, Hale attended the event to watch these memorable performances and talked about the actor and singer Billy Porter’s performance. The actor sang ‘Both Sides Now,’ released on Mitchell’s second album ‘Clouds.’ The frontwoman said his singing was otherworldly, and he got standing ovations three times. Hale described her feelings, saying she lost it, and cried twice while listening to Porter at the special event.

In Hale’s words, she said:

“Honestly, it happened to me recently over the last weekend. I went out to Vegas to go to MusiCares, the Person of The Year Gala for Joni Mitchell. There were so many amazing performers, but the one that I got lost in and cried twice. I wasn’t even paying attention. I wasn’t trying to record anything there. It was Billy Porter, and he did his version of ‘Both Sides Now’ from Joni Mitchell. He got three standing ovations from all of us during the performance. It was otherworldly.”
