In a new exclusive interview with Guitar World, Liam Gallagher shared his straightforward views on songwriting and music production, suggesting that artists shouldn’t overcomplicate the process.

Gallagher has recently collaborated with guitarist John Squire on a studio album, a partnership that culminated in the release of ‘Liam Gallagher John Squire’ on March 1, 2024. When asked about the complexity of making the album, Liam’s response was as follows:

“It was easy for me because all I had to do is sing. And I don’t think making music should be that f*cking hard. When people go on, like [tortured artist voice], ‘I went to the depths of the universe to bring you this music.’ F*ck off, man. We’re not curing f*cking cancer. We’re making music. It’s either good or it’s bad.”

A Career Of Collaboration

Throughout his career, Gallagher has predominantly left songwriting to others, focusing instead on his strengths as a vocalist and performer. This collaborative spirit was evident during his time with Oasis, where his brother Noel took on the role of primary songwriter.

Although songwriting has not been Liam’s main pursuit, he has occasionally ventured into it, with contributions like ‘Little James’ and ‘Songbird.’ His progression as a songwriter, while not his central ambition, has shown his ability to craft memorable music when he chooses to.

Beyond The Lone Songwriter Myth

Liam has been open about his lack of interest in being a lone songwriter, expressing contentment in having others write songs that he can bring to life with his distinctive vocal style. This stance was repeated in a 2022 interview where he mentioned:

“I’m never going to do this on my own. Even if I could, I wouldn’t. I need more help with people. I’m not that kind of person who sits at home with a guitar trying to write a song, I’ve got other things going on in my life. I’m not one of those committed songwriters sitting there looking for the greatest song. I’m quite happy for some other f*cker to do it and I’ll sing it and put it in the back of the net.”

The collaboration between Gallagher and Squire was not limited to the studio; it extended to a joint headline tour across the UK and Ireland, starting with a performance at the Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow, Scotland, on March 13. The tour, set to conclude on April 11 in Brooklyn, features the duo performing their album in full.
