Comedian Lewis Black expressed his reservations about using Metallica‘s ‘Enter Sandman’ as the opening theme for his latest comedy special, ‘Tragically, I Need You.’ Black’s remarks came during the introductory segment of his special, where he humorously conveyed his thoughts on the song’s impact on audience expectations.
Black shared his belief that while music is undeniably great, the use of ‘Enter Sandman’ tends to be overly intense, creating heightened anticipation among the audience. However, the comedic twist arrives as Black himself, a single aging Jew, steps onto the stage, subverting the grandiose expectations set by the music.
Lewis Black’s words on using the Metallica track:
“I think that music, I mean, it’s great, but it’s over the top. It creates an expectation in this room. You hear this, and you get f*cking pumped, and you think, ‘What’s gonna come out?‘ Jugglers and sword swallowers and fire eaters and gymnasts and f*cking wild animals even, jaguars and tigers and … and then just one aging Jew wanders on the stage.”
‘Enter Sandman’ has found its way into various realms beyond music. It has been adopted as a theme song for professional sports teams, energizing the crowd before games. The track’s exhilarating qualities and recognizable melody have also enhanced dramatic moments in movies, television shows, and video games, intensifying action sequences.
