Lars Ulrich announced his father, Torben Ulrich’s passing with an Instagram post on December 20, 2023. He recently used the platform again to share his feelings and thank his followers for their support. Posting a black and white photo of Torben, the drummer wrote:
“Since my dad’s passing 10 days ago, there has been an unexpected influx of condolences, messages, stories, and testimonies coming my way about how his life impacted and affected so many people in a variety of different ways; it’s honestly blown me away.”
His words continued:
“As you can imagine, it’s been quite a surreal time, so let me say from the heart how much I truly appreciate every single thought, sentiment, feeling, and emotion you’ve kindly taken the time to share with me. It means so, so, so much… Thank you, thank you, thank you…”
Torben Ulrich’s Death News Didn’t Reach Everyone In The Industry

Torben passed away only a week before his son’s 60th birthday. Ulrich’s wife, Jessica Miller, celebrated her husband on Instagram while also sharing her sadness over the 95-year-old man’s death.
Fans and some names from the industry followed Miller’s post by congratulating the Metallica drummer. But apparently, not all of them were aware that he was also grieving, as Sammy Hagar commented on Ulrich’s recent post by explaining:
“My friend, I had no idea about your father’s passing as I wished you a happy birthday last week. Strange times indeed. But probably perfectly orchestrated by the master.”
Many Names Shared Their Condolences

When Ulrich first announced his father’s passing, he highlighted the late tennis player and musician’s ‘unique experiences, curiosity, pushing boundaries, challenging the status quo, tennis, music, art, writing, and quite a bit of Danish contrarian attitude.’
In response, Skid Row’s Sebastian Bach referred to Torben’s contributions to Metallica and the drummer’s music. He recalled the ‘delete that’ moment from ‘Metallica: Some Kind Of Monster,’ writing:
“Your Dad was cool as f**k. I would say, ‘Delete that.’ Completely legendary. Your Dad will always be by your side.”
Meanwhile, Matt Sorum shared:
“Your relationship with your Dad was always inspiring to me. Thank you for sharing him with the world. Condolences to the entire Ulrich family.”
