Lars Ulrich Called Himself ‘The Worst Drummer,’ Megadeth Legend Reveals

In a recent interview on the ‘Three Sides of Coin Podcast,’ former Megadeth bassist David Ellefson shared his thoughts on Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich. Although Ulrich has been criticized for his drumming skills, Ellefson has great respect for his musical contributions. Recalling a backstage jam in Bulgaria during ‘The Big Four’ tour, Ellefson jokingly called himself ‘the worst drummer in the room,’ which Ellefson disagreed with. Ellefson put it this way:

“Lars jokingly says, ‘Oh shit… I’m the worst drummer in the room!’ I would argue, ‘No, you’re the best drummer in the room.'”

Ellefson continued to talk about Ulrich. Emphasizing Lars’ ability to compose songs from the drum kit, Ellefson compared him to Peter Criss of KISS. He said:

“He’s a ‘parts guy.’ He’s not worried about playing drums as like, you have to be this proficient guy. He writes songs within his drumming. And I was watching him, and I’m going, ‘He is the Peter Criss of Metallica.’ Because Peter, when you hear that drum solo, dude, that drum solo on KISS ‘Alive!’ (in the middle of their rendition of ‘100,000 Years’) is like, unequaled. His tool is the drum kit. Who the fuck can compose a song from behind the drum kit? He can! And some of the biggest ones ever in the world.”

Ellefson Believes Metallica Members Are Kind And Gracious

David Ellefson has been making a lot of positive comments about Metallica lately. In a new interview with Chris McLernon and Jack Trash of the ‘Plus One: A Rock N Roll Podcast,’ David Ellefson spoke about Metallica members and his love for their music. He said:

“They’re kind, they’re gracious, they’re cool guys. Their whole organization is a well-oiled, huge operation. It’s like the Microsoft of metal. And it’s run very well. And then, when the lights go down and the show starts, all that goes away and you’re just watching — to many, four superheroes; to me, four awesome friends kicking ass, playing great songs, most of which I’m a fan of. And I say ‘most,’ because, you know — I’d say up through ‘The Black Album,’ for sure.”

Ellefson Was Considered For The Metallica Bass Guitarist

Although he can’t prove it to be completely true, David Ellefson thinks that when Metallica was recruiting for a bassist, he was on their shortlist. He said in a 2019 interview that Metallica thought of him at the time and that he would be in service if necessary. He said:

“They didn’t call me. I know that there was a conversation about considering me. I know Lars (Ulrich) and Dave (Mustaine) had chatted, ’cause (Metallica) were putting their short list together. And, to be honest with you… Metallica are great, and I’m a fan of theirs and friends with them, and I would be there to be of service with them in whatever way, but they, I think, made their decision right around the time when Megadeth had disbanded in 2002.”
