Kiki Wong recently shared the story of how she joined The Smashing Pumpkins as their new guitarist. She detailed the unexpected journey from a casual gaming session to landing a spot with the iconic rock band, as reported by Classic Rock History.
Wong’s path to joining the band began during an ordinary evening while she was pregnant and winding down with video games. When asked about how she ended up with The Smashing Pumpkins, Wong provided a detailed account of the serendipitous events.
“It was funny. I was about five months pregnant, give or take, and was winding down after a long day of taking care of the baby by playing Call of Duty,” Wong said. “I remember one of my fiancé Neil’s friends sent me a post saying that the Smashing Pumpkins were auditioning. I thought it was fake, but when I clicked through, there it was blue check mark and all.”
Despite initial skepticism about her chances among thousands of applicants, Wong decided to take the leap with encouragement from friends.
“I was on comms and asked my friends, ‘Should I do it?’ They all immediately replied, ‘Yes!’ So, I hopped off for a minute, created a resume, sent it into the ether, and waited,” she continued. “I didn’t expect much since the post had already gained 4,000+ likes, so I figured my resume would get lost in the mix. But eventually, I got the call back for a Zoom meeting with the band.”
The initial interview proved to be a natural fit. Wong connected immediately with band leader Billy Corgan over shared musical interests.
“When it actually happened, the vibes were so good. I ended up talking to Billy about heavy metal and Dimebag Darrell for most of the interview,” Wong explained. “It ended up being such an exciting and high-energy conversation, almost like talking to an old friend I hadn’t spoken to in years, yet I was speaking to rock icons of the ’90s.”
The final stages of the audition process required patience and preparation. The process culminated in a successful in-person audition in Los Angeles.
“It took about three months to receive a callback. I was almost certain the spot was filled, but Neil kept insisting I had it in the bag,” she said. “I later received a call that I needed to travel to LA in two weeks and learn four songs. I packed up our little family and drove from Phoenix, Arizona, to LA. I was the first one up, as I later found out, for the auditions that day. The next day, I found out I had the gig. It was truly a dream come true.”
Wong joined The Smashing Pumpkins in 2024 as a replacement for Jeff Schroeder.
Wong’s success story becomes even more remarkable when considering the scale of competition she faced and her musical background that prepared her for this moment.
CBS News reported that Wong beat approximately 10,000 applicants in Billy Corgan’s open audition process held in winter 2024. The massive response to the audition call demonstrated the enduring appeal of joining one of alternative rock’s most influential bands. Wong’s journey to this pivotal moment began much earlier in her life, when she got her first guitar from Costco at 13 years old.
Her musical foundation was built through years of dedicated pursuit of her craft. Guitar World noted that Wong has been pursuing music professionally since 2010. This included participating in what she describes as “crazy bootleg tours” early in her career. These formative experiences included challenging conditions where three people would sleep in the back of a truck. This demonstrated her commitment to music long before achieving mainstream recognition.
Wong’s background in metal guitar and her previous work with the all-Asian-American girl band Nylon Pink provided her with the technical skills and stage experience that would prove crucial during the audition process. Her ability to connect with Billy Corgan over heavy metal discussions, particularly about influential guitarist Dimebag Darrell, showcased not only her musical knowledge but also her genuine passion for the genre.
The timing of Wong’s addition to The Smashing Pumpkins coincided with the band’s ambitious touring plans. CBS News revealed that The Smashing Pumpkins were preparing for an international tour starting in the U.K. in June 2025. This made Wong’s successful audition even more significant as she would be stepping into a high-profile role with immediate touring responsibilities.
