REO Speedwagon frontman Kevin Cronin recently addressed his stance on authentic live performances. He responded to fan comments on his Facebook page.
The discussion began when a fan praised the band’s raw talent and lack of processing in their performances. Cronin’s response emphasized his commitment to genuine live music without technological assistance.
‘As touring singers, we are vulnerable to having tough nights at the mic,’ Cronin said. ‘But I refuse to use tracks under my lead vocals. Live performance is meant to be real.’
The veteran musician further elaborated on his philosophy regarding live performance authenticity.
‘I always give it all I’ve got, and some nights are better than others… We are human,’ he continued. ‘Lip-synching is not an option for me.’
Cronin’s dedication to authentic live performance reflects a career built on genuine connection with audiences.
This commitment to authenticity aligns with REO Speedwagon’s historic achievements in live performance. Ultimate Classic Rock reported that the band was honored with being the first live stereo concert broadcast on MTV during their ‘Hi Infidelity’ tour in Denver, Colorado. The performance was later released as ‘Live Infidelity’ on home video. This milestone demonstrated the band’s ability to deliver compelling performances without studio enhancements.
Cronin’s stance on live performance authenticity has remained consistent throughout his career with REO Speedwagon. Wikipedia noted that Cronin has been the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for REO Speedwagon since 1972. He helped the band achieve massive commercial success with hits like ‘Keep On Loving You’ and ‘Can’t Fight This Feeling.’
The band’s approach to live performance has been shaped by their extensive touring experience and dedication to connecting with fans. iHeart Radio documented that Cronin has discussed how the band’s live performances have always prioritized emotional connection over technical perfection. He emphasized the human element that makes rock music compelling.
Cronin’s vocal performances serve as a testament to his belief that live music should capture the raw energy and emotion that can only come from genuine human expression, rather than technological assistance.
