In a recent interview with Eddie Trunk on SiriusXM, Kenny Aronoff addressed the circumstances of Jason Bonham’s departure from Sammy Hagar’s band.

Fans had speculated about Bonham’s exit, with some believing he was fired. Aronoff stepped forward to clarify the situation surrounding his replacement of Bonham.

“I went to go see them as a fan ‘cuz I know all of them. And when Jason Bonham couldn’t do certain gigs, I got the call to fill in for Jason,” Aronoff explained.

He described the rapid transition into the band: “And this is no rehearsals. I think we did one corporate gig. I did a rehearsal once with Sammy in somebody’s garage or something. We rehearsed for like 45 minutes. That’s it.”

Aronoff then revealed the true circumstances behind Bonham’s departure. “I went to see them at the Forum. And it was unbelievable. Apparently back then, Jason found out his mom was hospitalized. I didn’t know any of this. I was just having fun backstage. I went out. And two days later, I get a call saying, ‘Listen, we have a situation.’  I was like, ‘What? Wow.'”

Personal family circumstances, not band conflicts, prompted Bonham’s departure.

The lineup change represented a significant shift for the band after years of collaboration between Bonham and Hagar.

Records from biographical sources showed Bonham’s significant role in The Circle. He had performed with Sammy Hagar’s supergroup since 2014, alongside Hagar, Michael Anthony, and Vic Johnson.

WMGK noted the band’s diverse musical range during Bonham’s tenure. Their performances featured Led Zeppelin tracks alongside songs from Hagar’s career, including material from Van Halen, Montrose, and Chickenfoot.

Drummer World highlighted The Circle’s reputation as a powerful live act. Bonham’s drumming style honored his father’s legacy while bringing fresh elements to Hagar’s catalog.

Aronoff’s quick adaptation to the band ensured their continued momentum despite the unexpected change.
