The Recording Industry Association of America certified ‘Don’t Stop Believin” 18 times platinum, and Forbes recently recognized it as the biggest song of all time.

In his recent tweets, Neal Schon shared the news with fans and expressed excitement for the news. He wrote:

“We now officially have the biggest song in the world ever in the history of music! Congratulations to all.”

Schon Reached Out To Steve Perry

The song was co-written by Schon, Steve Perry, and Jonathan Cain. The guitarist also revealed a message he sent to Steve. It showed that Schon congratulated him for the achievement. He shared this in a screenshot following his announcement tweet. The rocker wrote the following to the former Journey singer:

“Congratulations Steve, we got it more then right.”

A fan asked him if Perry responded to this message. Schon replied:

“Lol, no. But I’m tired of everyone saying you left Steve out. Jesus, everyone knows he wrote it with us. I said congratulations to all.”

Perry’s Thoughts On A Classic

Perry himself always saw potential in ‘Don’t Stop Believin’.’ In a 2009 chat with CBC, he recalled the song’s early days and its reception. He explained:

“The lyric is a strong lyric about not giving up, but it’s also about being young, it’s also about hanging out, not giving up and looking for that emotion hiding somewhere in the dark that we’re all looking for. It’s about having hope and not quitting when things get tough, because I’m telling you things get tough for everybody.”

Still, Journey faced backlash from fans about the hit track in January. At an NFL game between the Detroit Lions and the San Francisco 49ers, the band changed the ‘Don’t Stop Believin” lyrics to ‘Born and raised in San Francisco.’ This upset many Detroit supporters, and social media was filled with comments criticizing the change. The performance at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara included four songs, but it was the alteration of ‘Don’t Stop Believin” that stood out the most.
