Journey’s Jonathan Cain recently admitted to fabricating statements about the band offering Steve Perry a chance to rejoin for their farewell tour. He addressed the misleading claims in an interview with Rolling Stone.
Cain acknowledged that his previous statements about Neal Schon extending a reunion offer to Perry were deliberately false and intended to generate discussion.
“I just kind of planted a little seed out,” Cain said. “I was trying to fish a little bit, and say, ‘Well, he’s thinking about it.’ He came immediately out and said, ‘No, I’m not.'”
The keyboardist explained his motivation behind the deceptive statements.
“I kind of did that on purpose, because there’s just so much fake AI stuff going on,” he continued. “You just look at it and go, ‘Wait a minute, no, that’s not true. None of this is true.'”
Cain had previously claimed that “Neal already asked, and he says (Perry’s) thinking about it. I hope he comes out. It’s never too late. We’ve got 100 shows, so he’s welcome at any one of them.”
This revelation comes as Journey continues their extensive farewell tour. The tour has become one of the most significant final runs in rock history. The band’s decision to fabricate reunion rumors highlights the ongoing tension between past and present lineups.
Journey’s current farewell tour represents a massive undertaking that spans multiple continents and features over 100 dates. The band has announced this as their final commitment to touring on such a grand scale. The tour has drawn millions of fans worldwide who want to witness the legendary rock band’s last major performances. This extensive farewell run demonstrates Journey’s enduring popularity and their desire to properly say goodbye to their global fanbase.
Steve Perry’s departure from Journey in 1987 marked the end of an era for the band. His distinctive voice had defined their most successful period during the late 1970s and 1980s. Perry left the group after creative differences and health concerns, particularly issues with his hip that required surgery. Since his departure, Perry has maintained a largely separate career path. He occasionally performs solo material but remains notably distant from the band’s various reunion efforts over the past decades.
The relationship between Perry and his former bandmates has remained complex. Sporadic attempts at reconciliation have occurred over the years. Perry’s reluctance to rejoin Journey has been well-documented. He has consistently chosen to pursue his own artistic direction rather than return to the band that made him famous. His absence from Journey’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2017 further emphasized the distance between the former frontman and the band.
Journey has continued to tour and record with different vocalists since Perry’s departure. They have worked most notably with Arnel Pineda, who joined the band in 2007 and has been their primary singer for over a decade. The band’s ability to maintain their popularity without Perry demonstrates their musical resilience. Many fans continue to hope for a reunion that appears increasingly unlikely given Perry’s consistent stance on the matter.
