Jon Schaffer has announced his return with Sons Of Liberty, sharing his vision for a new musical chapter that focuses on solutions rather than just exposing problems. The statement was shared through The Circle Music.

Schaffer reflected on the original purpose of Sons Of Liberty and outlined his philosophical approach to freedom and personal liberty.

“Sons Of Liberty was always meant to be more than music; it was a wake-up call and an attempt to start brushfires of freedom in the minds of those with ears to hear,” Schaffer said. “Those who know me know that I am not here to please everyone; not with my music, nor with my ideals and principles. I respect the rights of others to disagree, and to speak freely.”

He emphasized the importance of defending others’ rights to free expression, even when disagreeing with their views.

“I will stand up for their rights, especially if I strongly disagree with them. This is the cornerstone of liberty,” he continued. “It’s not so impressive to stand up for the people that share your beliefs and agree with you. Are you into freedom enough to allow others to live as they choose, as long as they don’t aggress? This is a legitimate question that we all should reflect on.”

Schaffer also discussed the evolution of his message since the first Sons Of Liberty album in 2009.

“My wish with the first Sons Of Liberty album in 2009 was to inspire the people to inform themselves. When these songs were first released, I wanted to expose the financial and political systems that prosper through aggression and subjugate our personal freedom,” he explained. “17 years later the message has only become more relevant, and the situation more urgent.”

The musician acknowledged his personal growth while maintaining his core principles.

“I am always learning, and I am always willing to be convinced that another point of view is a better way forward. Bring a reasonable argument, and I’m all ears,” he said. “Through the years I have grown, and changed my views as I learn, but my principles remain. I can’t see any other viable path to peace than through freedom.”

He expressed strong concerns about collectivism and government overreach.

“It is my strongly held belief that collectivism, when mandated by the state, in any form, is more dangerous to our liberties than an invading army,” Schaffer stated. “Trading our freedom for ‘safety’ has never turned out well. Not ever.”

Looking ahead, Schaffer outlined his plans for future Sons Of Liberty material.

“In the future, it is my intention to write a new chapter of Sons music focusing on what I believe to be the solution,” he concluded. “Until then, as a great friend and mentor says… Don’t aggress. Be an excellent human. Live and let live.”

This announcement marks a significant return for Schaffer. He has faced considerable challenges in recent years that have shaped both his personal and professional outlook.

Metal Wiki reported that Sons of Liberty was originally formed in 2009 as a highly political side project. The debut album “Brush-fires of the Mind” was released in December 2009 as a free download. The project represented Schaffer’s desire to address political and social issues through music. It established a platform for his libertarian-leaning views that would continue to evolve over the years.

The path back to Sons of Liberty has not been without obstacles for the Iced Earth founder. Following his involvement in the January 6th Capitol riot, Schaffer faced significant professional setbacks. Blabbermouth noted that his bandmates in Iced Earth and collaborators in Demons & Wizards distanced themselves from him. These events led to a period of reflection and personal transformation for the musician.

In a remarkable turn of perspective, Schaffer has described his legal troubles and professional challenges as transformative experiences. Blabbermouth revealed that in April 2025, Schaffer stated that his legal issues and professional setbacks have been “the biggest gift” of his life. They led him to Christ. This spiritual awakening appears to have influenced his current approach to Sons of Liberty and his emphasis on finding solutions rather than merely highlighting problems.

The return of Sons of Liberty represents more than just a musical comeback for Schaffer. It signals his commitment to continuing the conversation about freedom and personal liberty while incorporating the lessons learned from his recent experiences. As he prepares to write this new chapter focusing on solutions, fans and critics alike will be watching to see how his evolved perspective translates into his music and message.
