John Mellencamp Says His Collaboration With Bruce Springsteen Happened By Accident

John Mellencamp recently gave an interview to Forbes in which he revealed that he collaborated with Bruce Springsteen just by accident.

On February 27, 2020, John Mellencamp confirmed that he was in the studio to record a new album. In September 2020, around ten songs had already been recorded and mixed, but the final recording session was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Throughout the lockdown, John Mellencamp continued to work on new music material, which consisted of at least 15 new songs.

His new album was scheduled for release in 2020. However, the pandemic yet again delayed the planned release date. After announcing the album’s title, ‘Strictly A One-Eyed Jack,’ Mellencamp continued working on the project in 2021. In May 2021, he revealed the album was finished, and Bruce Springsteen had made a guest appearance on three songs.

In an interview with Forbes, the host Steve Baltin asked Mellencamp what made Springsteen the right person to collaborate on this record. As a response, the musician revealed this collaboration happened by accident. Following that, he talked about his friendship with Springsteen and said he was like a big brother to him.

In the interview, Forbes‘ Steve Baltin asked John Mellencamp the following:

“What made Bruce the right person to work with on this record or the right time?”

Mellencamp then responded:

It was quite an accident. For my entire career, I was always like the poor man’s Bruce Springsteen. And Bruce and I have known each other for years. We met each other years ago, but we just knew each other enough to say hi. But we did a rainforest thing for Sting, and we played together.

And all of a sudden, he was like my big brother, and he treated me like I was his sibling, and I treated him with respect. And then we became really good friends, and it just kind of happened. He came to Indiana. He stayed at the house. It was great. And I talk to Bruce all the time now. I know what he’s doing right now. He knows where I’m at. So it’s good. It’s been a good thing.”

On September 29, 2021, Mellencamp released his duet with Springsteen, ‘Wasted Days,’ as the ‘Strictly A One-Eyed Jack’ album’s single. Moreover, the album is scheduled for release on January 21, 2022.
