In a recent series of posts on X, John Lennon’s son, Sean, revealed that he thinks the United States has turned into the ‘land of the afraid.’

The musician initially shared a picture of a man sitting alone and captioned it with the following words, referring to the activist slogan ‘silence is violence’ to motivate majority groups into fighting for change:

“I wonder if this guy knows that silence is violence?”

Engaging With MLK Jr.’s Ideals

Then, a user on the platform replied to his tweet, asking:

“Do you agree with MLK Jr.’s quote: ‘Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter,’ Sean?”

Sean agreed with the late activist’s statement and noted:

“I do, actually. And I think that America’s life has clearly begun to end, so to speak.”

Sean’s View On American Culture And Fear Of Speaking Out

When another user requested a more detailed explanation for his words, the rocker stated, criticizing the current environment in the US:

“We’re all afraid to say the wrong thing. Saying the wrong thing can ruin your life. Didn’t used to be that way. No longer the land of the free. It’s the land of the afraid.”

In reply to a now-deleted comment, probably referring to the cancel culture, Sean wrote:

“More like ‘cancer’ culture.”

Lennon’s Take On Post-9/11 America And Political Correctness

This is not the first time Lennon shared his observations on the political climate of his country. Last month, again on X, the singer reflected on the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, attacks in the United States and wrote:

“I remember just after 9/11, America rightly had the sympathy of the entire world. We then systematically squandered that sympathy. Just saying.”

Back in 2021, Sean had again raised his concerns about the issue of political correctness in a series of tweets. He disclosed that racial relations in the country are getting worse and believes that being too politically correct is causing problems we didn’t expect, writing:

“And to be clear, I am not blaming all of the bad things we are seeing in culture today on political correctness. Yes, we inherited a problematic history, and I think PC culture has achieved some good and some progress for society. I am simply saying we should check our strategy if we are not getting the results we intended. I don’t know what the solution is, but I suspect that over-sensitizing people to arbitrary characteristics like skin color may be doing more harm than good.”
