Ex-Mötley Crüe singer John Corabi recently opened up about his biggest romantic regret involving a major Hollywood star. He shared the story in an interview with TotalRock.
The revelation came when Corabi was asked about whether he had a celebrity crush or “a love that will never be” from his younger days.
“Actually, you know, if you read my book, there was a brief moment that I had met and hung out with Sandra Bullock,” Corabi said. “And we were hanging when she was filming Demolition Man, and apparently, she went to change, she told me to wait. I waited, I thought she was taking a little long, so I went to where she was. Somehow she went a different way, came back to where I was, and I was gone.”
The missed connection became even more painful when Corabi learned what happened next.
“And she asked my guitar tech, Bobby O, who was, well, he was a mix tech in Mötley, and she goes, ‘Hey, can I get John’s number?'” he continued. “And Bobby, I still get him to this day. I go, ‘I should punch you in the throat. That’s the one time you could have given that girl my number.’ And he didn’t do it until he could ask me.”
Corabi reflected on the timing of the missed opportunity. He noted how Bullock’s career skyrocketed shortly after their brief encounter.
“And she just kind of became like this massive star,” he said. “Next movie was Speed, and she just blew up, you know what I mean? So that was the one that got away from me. That was the love that’ll never be.”
This romantic regret comes from a particularly turbulent period in Corabi’s career. He was navigating his role as the replacement for one of rock’s most recognizable voices.
American Songwriter reported that Corabi served as Mötley Crüe’s lead singer from 1992 to 1996. He stepped in after Vince Neil’s departure due to heavy drinking and racing pursuits. The timing of his encounter with Bullock would have coincided with this challenging transition period in the band’s history.
Ultimate Classic Rock noted that Corabi’s tenure with the band resulted in the 1994 self-titled album. This marked a significant departure from the band’s previous sound. The album became an ill-fated attempt to move forward with a new vocalist. The band struggled to maintain their commercial success without Neil’s distinctive voice.
During his time with Mötley Crüe, Corabi brought both vocal and songwriting contributions to the band. Music Feeds revealed that he contributed lyrics and guitar work to the band’s 1994 release. He helped to create a heavier, more alternative rock sound that reflected the musical trends of the early 1990s.
The Sandra Bullock encounter represents just one of many “what if” moments from this era of Corabi’s life. Both his career and personal opportunities seemed to hang in the balance during this time. His eventual departure from Mötley Crüe in 1996 marked the end of this brief but significant chapter in rock history. Neil returned to reclaim his position at that time.
