Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry recently spoke about the current state of the iconic rock band.
When asked directly, “What’s the current state of play with Aerosmith, Joe?”, Perry offered an update on what the band has been working on amid their announced retirement from touring due to Steven Tyler’s ongoing voice issues.
“We’re right in the middle of working on a documentary, the story of the band from the beginning,” Perry said. “Everyone has a different perspective on what happened back then. We also did a thing with Yungblud [a five-song EP that included a remake of Aerosmith’s Back In The Saddle].”
Perry also reflected on the energy that the collaboration with the young rock artist brought to the sessions.
“Watching Yungblud dance around the studio made me remember what it was like to be twenty-seven years old,” he continued. “He is the real deal, with such incredible energy. When he talks, every other word is: ‘I love rock’n’roll’ and you can tell that he does.”
Aerosmith has stepped back from live performances. Perry’s remarks, however, hint that the band has not gone entirely quiet, with creative projects still underway and the possibility of a return not fully ruled out.
The band’s recent activity tells a fuller story. The collaborative EP with Yungblud, titled One More Time, marks Aerosmith’s first new music in over twelve years. Released via Capitol Records in November 2025, the project features a 2025 mix of the classic “Back In The Saddle” alongside four original tracks. It is a significant creative milestone for a band that had largely gone silent since cancelling their Peace Out farewell tour following Tyler’s larynx fracture.
Perry has been candid about Tyler’s condition and what it means for the band’s future on the road. “I’ve been spending a lot of time with Steven and he just doesn’t want to tour and he can’t tour,” Perry stated plainly. Yet in the same breath, he left a door open: “I would bet that there’s an Aerosmith show left.” That potential show, Perry suggested, could be tied directly to the documentary project currently in development.
The documentary itself has had a turbulent path. A 50th-anniversary retrospective project had been in development for years before Aerosmith’s management shut it down in October 2025. The current documentary Perry references appears to be a separate effort. It is one that the band is actively working on and that could serve as the backdrop for a one-off special performance in 2026.
Beyond the studio and screen, the band’s footprint has been quietly fading in other areas as well. Disney World officially removed the Aerosmith preshow from its Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster attraction in late 2025. This capped a 26-year run that began in 1999 and marked yet another symbolic closing of a chapter for a band that defined arena rock for generations.
Still, Perry’s tone throughout remains one of possibility rather than finality. With new music released, a documentary in progress, and talk of at least one more live moment, Aerosmith appears to be writing its final chapter on its own terms — and that chapter may not be finished yet.
