Joan Jett and Lita Ford, former bandmates in the groundbreaking 1970s rock band The Runaways, still despise each other, according to fellow band member Cherie Currie. In a recent interview with Marko Syrjälä of Metal Rules and SySi Media, Currie discussed the strained relationship between Jett and Ford, the band’s tumultuous past, and her belief that a full reunion of the band will likely never happen.
The Runaways, formed in the mid-1970s, was a pioneering all-female rock band featuring Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Cherie Currie, Jackie Fox, and Sandy West. Despite their success and influence on the rock scene, they disbanded in 1979 due to various internal issues. Currie explained that the rocky relationship between Jett and Ford might have played a significant role in the band’s ultimate breakup, with both artists pursuing successful solo careers after the band dissolved.
Currie shared her thoughts on the complicated relationship between Jett and Ford and provided an example of why she believes a reunion will never happen. She recounted a time more than 25 years ago when a Runaways reunion almost took place but ultimately fell through due to Lita’s animosity towards Jett’s longtime manager, Kenny Laguna. Currie expressed her disappointment and frustration over Ford’s refusal to participate in the reunion for the sake of their late bandmate, Sandy West.
Cherie Currie’s words about Joan Jett and Lita Ford’s tense relationship read:
“[The chances of The Runaways reuniting are very slim] because Lita and Joan don’t see eye to eye. I really hoped it would happen, but now I absolutely believe it will not unless there’s a miracle on Joan and Lita’s side, which I doubt. But I can’t control people. And it’s too bad because it could have been great.”
Despite Cherie’s efforts to bring the band back together and mend the rift between Jett and Ford, it seems that fans of The Runaways will have to continue cherishing the group’s legacy through their music rather than hope for a full reunion. With the passage of time and continued animosity, the possibility of seeing these iconic rockers on stage together again appears increasingly unlikely.
