Ahead of releasing a new documentary, ‘Joan Baez I Am A Noise,’ Joan Baez joined an interview with CBS Sunday Morning to discuss her life and past relationship with Bob Dylan. Answering a question about how Dylan broke her heart in the ’60s, the singer shared:
“It was probably the deepest I’ve ever felt for somebody. I think when somebody walks away from you, you feel a lot more than if you walk away from them. I got walked away from in a big way.”
Following her relationship with Dylan, Baez entered into a marriage with David Harris, but the couple got divorced in 1973. So, while talking about her post-divorce life in the recent interview, the singer explained her singleness by saying:
“I don’t want to take on one more thing like trying to find the appropriate partner. It seems such an exhausting idea that I said, ‘I quit!'”
Meanwhile, according to a different interview with Variety from early 2023, the vocalist found closure in her breakup with the ‘Blowin’ In The Wind’ singer while, one day, listening to his music and doing his portrait in her art studio. Then, she sent him a letter about it:
“And that was it. I didn’t put a return address or an email or anything that was in any way trying to get something out of him; I just wanted him to know how much he meant to me. How much his music had meant to me. And I may never see him again, and that’s okay too.”
The documentary, ‘Joan Baez I Am A Noise,’ set to release on October 6, will include the singer’s archive of home movies, letters, and drawings.
