Alice in Chains guitarist and vocalist Jerry Cantrell unveiled the band’s songs that determined their style during his latest interview with FaceCulture. Cantrell stated that their early works from the first album contributed a lot by explaining the process in detail.

The band’s first and most known lineup consists of Cantrell, drummer Sean Kinney, bassist Mike Starr, and lead vocalist Layne Staley. Since 1987, Alice in Chains members has created, released, and performed iconic songs that became an inspiration for the young generation of musicians that wanted to follow their steps in the music industry even though they had to face several problems and lineup changes over the years.

Critics generally described their style as grunge with heavy metal elements, which was essential for their well-crafted lyrics and sounds. Therefore, the host wanted to know the works that helped them create their sounds which brought them great fame and commercial success in time. Cantrell responded to the question, saying that unreleased records from their first years, from 1987 to 1990, shaped their music.

The guitarist emphasized that the band members were from the same generation and similar artists and bands influenced them, but Alice in Chains icons worked on finding their unique and different sounds more and more. According to Cantrell, as a result of that, they could look at their works and admire them. Creating their sounds was a process before the famous group released their debut studio album ‘Facelift’ on August 21, 1990.

Jerry Cantrell said in his interview that:

Probably some songs that we never released, pre ‘Facelift.’ A few turned the corner; as Taylor said, We’re of the same generation of the ’80s. So, there are a lot of those bands that I dug, but maybe we’re not quite where we ended up. That’s the point. You get inspired by other people and emulate them. Then, at some point, you start doing your thing, and one day you look at each other and like, ‘Man! This is pretty cool.’

All of a sudden, you’ve got a sound, so you keep going. Once you find it and you’re all together on that, you know what happens. I don’t know if I could tell you the tune, but it was pre ‘Facelift’ when we started to come into focus as a band. We were formed in December of ’87, and ‘Facelift’ came out in ’90. For a band to develop within two years basically from nothing to that record.”
