Jeff Schroeder Confirms Smashing Pumpkins Is Halfway Through Another Big Album

The alternative rock band Smashing Pumpkins’ guitarist Jeff Schroeder stated in an interview on ‘Audio Ink Radio’ that the band is currently working on a new big album.

Smashing Pumpkins’ last album ‘Cyr’ was released in November 2020, during the pandemic. ‘Cyr’ was composed of 20 tracks and they were all written by Billy Corgan, the band’s lead singer. The album reached the top 10 on the 2020 US Billboard’s list of ‘Top Rock Albums’ becoming another great achievement for the band.

In a recent interview, the band’s guitarist Schroeder explained to his fans that they are already working on another album that will be bigger than the previous one with 33 tracks. He stated that they have been working on it for almost a year and revealed that it will be a concept album. He spoke about the new album as being the ‘third in a trilogy’ of their 1995 album ‘Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness’ and 2000 album ‘Machina.’

Here is what he revealed:

“We’re about halfway through working on another big album, which is, basically, I guess, a sequel to ‘Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness’ and ‘Machina’, so it’s the third in a trilogy – more of a concept-based album. And this one is 33 songs. We’ve been working for a long – almost, basically, the whole year on it.”

Schroeder continued to talk about the new album and his experiences in the process of creating it. While he stated that drummer Jimmy Chamberlin’s work is pretty much done, he added that it was more challenging for him to work on this album as a guitarist. He also mentioned that he needs time to ‘dig deep’ into himself to be able to create what he wants to create.

Here is his full statement about his experiences with their new album’s production:

“We’re in the middle of real tracking and stuff right now. James and I are working out here in L.A. Drums are basically done, so Jimmy’s done his part but Billy is working in Chicago, and I’m out here in L.A., and James is in L.A., so we’re plowing through it. That’ll probably take most of the rest of the year because it’s a big, sprawling thing.

It’s been very challenging to work on a piece that big because even for me as a guitar player, usually you’re always kind of working on things and you have a bunch of ideas to try on these new tracks. And then, after four songs, you’re like, ‘OK, I’ve gotta come up with some other stuff.’ So, then, you work hard and get through the first 11 songs, and you’re like, ‘Oh, wait a second. That’s only the first act. I’ve got two more acts to go!’

So, you’ve really gotta dig in deep. You’ve gotta dig deep into your soul to find out what is in there. What’s this song calling for? How can I listen to this song differently than I listened to the last one? And it really pushes you artistically. Some days it’s hard, and we fail. I fail. And then you come back the next day and try again, and it’s rewarding when you go, ‘Wow, yesterday sucked, and today is actually quite good on the same song.’ So it can be fun.”

The guitarist did not reveal when the album will be released but it is already good news for the fans that there will be something new soon. Although he stated that it is a hard album to create, he also showed his ways of overcoming those difficulties and having a positive attitude in order to produce a good song.
